Ok. I'm not interested in "collecting" trumpets. I just need a couple of good horns to play.

But how many is too many.

I have 4 B-flats, C, a cornet, a piccolo and a flugelhorn.

I just bought a euphonium. So, I've clearly crossed the line.

3 Bb, 1 cornet, 1 flugel.

I still need a C and a pic, but I'm having trouble sneaking those past the spouse.

Warm regards,
Grits

How many horns I have:
3 Bb Trumpets (Bach 43*, Bach 37, Olds Ambassador)
1 C Trumpet (Bach CML)
4 Cornets (Bach NY, Bach 184, Olds Ambassador, Besson)
2 Flugelhorns (Olds L-12, Getzen Eterna)
1 Pocket Trumpet (Carolbrass)
1 Piccolo Trumpet (Getzen Eterna)
1 Field Trumpet (Getzen)
1 Alto Horn (HW White)

How many horns are too many:
(# of horns I own) - (# of horns I play regularly)
... or maybe ...
(# of horns I really own) - (# of horns my wife thinks I own)

Mike

Bach LR180 ML 37 Bb
70's vintage Getzen Eterna flugel
Olds Ambassador trombone
Conn Artley flute (does that count as a horn?)

Horns I used to own and wish I still did:

Claude Gordon Selmer (if my son ever gets a new horn, it's mine again)
Bach C180L 229H (actually I hated this horn but still want a C trumpet)
Getzen Eterna 940 piccolo
Holton Superbone
King Cleveland cornet
Olds Ambassador cornet
1975 Getzen Eterna Severinsen Bb

I also own about eleventy-six mouthpieces.

2 Pics

7 trumpets all Bb
7 cornets
1 baritone
I’ve recently given away 3 cornets, 2 trumpets and a trombone so my totals would have been higher if the thread were older

2 Bbs-- Bach strad lr43 and a Melchoir u Sohn

2 cornets--- Schilke XA1 and an Olds Ambassador

My 2 daughters each have their student horns; a Yamaha Advantage and a Getzen 400.

I've been thinking about a flugel a good bit lately,
But of course the wife doesn't understand. There's no such thing as too many trumpets.🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺

My picc has three bells and crook sets, so, if the answer is yes, then my total goes up by 2.

Hi,

A fun discussion and I hope my post doesn't appear too smart, nor bitter, a response.

Should the question not be; how many trumpets do you have and how many do you actually do justice to?

Whilst I am the first to support enthusiasm for the instrument and share a love for trumpets and mouthpieces, it is really an irrelevance how many trumpets one owns (and I apologise if this has missed the point of the discussion). I know, and have taught, people who have spent vast sums of money collecting some of the finest trumpets in the world, and yet are unable to produce a solid sound or any respectable production on a single one of them.

Perhaps my comments are made out of frustration from my experiences growing up and, even more recently, the times that I have appeared as a 'guest professional' with semi-professional or amateur/community orchestras. But on far too many occasions I have found the section sat around discussing their impressive collections, and sometimes talking disparagingly about brands they regard as 'too mainstream', in what often becomes more of an ego-contest than anything else, only to find that when the baton comes down they all display very mediocre ability both musically and technically.

I don't say this to condescend anyone, or to adopt a position of superiority, but to make the point that (and I'm not suggesting that people here are doing this) the size, expense, or prestige of your collection does not have any bearing on your ability as a musician or trumpet player. Unfortunately in my experience a surprisingly high number of players get that fact a little confused.

I hope this adds to this discussion and makes a point without causing any offence or confrontation. I am very aware that this was not the topic of the post, and only seek to add an opinion that others may find interesting.

All the best to you all

FYI I have
- 4 Bbs (2 are for sale haha)
-1 Eb
-1 Picc
-1 Flugel
-1 Cornet

I agree, & I'll go "one better" why don't we each post a recording of our trumpet-playing ability & actually HEAR who can play (or not). I have posted more than 5 recordings on these boards, yet, almost no one here has done that....having said that; I have owned more than 200 horns in my 55 years of playing; currently have only about 8-10 that I consider good horns. Agree that I mostly play 1 or 2 that I REALLY like. My absolute favorite, right now is one that I "created" by swapping the bell and installing a custom "floating lead-pipe" made by Josh Landress in NY.

3 Bb, one of which is my daily player (second horn I bought in my life), one backup (my first horn), and one I bought out of interest in a different concept
1 flugel
1 bass trumpet
About 10 mouthpieces (—> how many mouthpieces do you own? 🙈)

I would also like to be able to play like a professional but family and job do not allow for that. On the other hand, even for a solid hobby/semipro player it is more fun to have a good instrument. I do hence understand the discussions on gear - in fact a hobby need not bring in money and other people waste way more on cars or motorcycles or other stuff, so as long as the player fits with the ensemble I do not really care if he or she plays a plastic trumpet or a Monette.

In that context see my list of dream horns below. Do I need them? No. Would it be fun to have them? Sure!
