Here's the bad news: I am up one horn
Expecting delivery of a brand new Yamaha 8310Z I bought for fantastic (!!!) price. This thus yields an updated list
1980 Blessing Scholastic - my first horn
1992 Bach 43GH w/ 43 leadpipe - my daily player
1960s Hüttl Silver Colibri - fantastic jazz combo horn but needs some dents taken out and a good valve cleaning
2018 Yamaha 8310Z on the way
1989 Kühnl & Hoyer Mod. 15 flugel
2018 Prisma bass trumpet - trying to save money (see Yamaha above ) for a really good bass trumpet _________________ 2019 Martin Schmidt eXcellence
1992 Bach 43GH/43

Hi,
Yeah, this is a pretty bitter response.

Not at all. You don't have to be a professional driver to collect cars. You don't have to drink tea exclusively to collect teaspoons. And you don't even have to play trumpet/cornet/flugel to collect them.
The idea that we have to 'do an instrument justice' is so ridiculous - like there's a benchmark for how much you're allowed to enjoy your instrument. I'm in a similar position to you, in that I often 'guest' with amateur ensembles. If collecting keeps someone enthused about brass playing, then let them collect. If someone is also happy just playing their T-100 from the 70s they've always played with an 11B4 and they turn up to practice every week (and that's the only time they practice), who cares? That's why they're not professionals.
I get what you say about disparaging brands, but everyone has an opinion (that's why there's so many trumpet makers out there). If you want to talk about playing music well, the topic would be "How many pages of the Arban's do you actually play" or "How much practice do you do to improve"? |

Oh - I almost forgot
1939 King Master Cornet.

Should the question not be; how many trumpets do you have and how many do you actually do justice to?
Whilst I am the first to support enthusiasm for the instrument and share a love for trumpets and mouthpieces, it is really an irrelevance how many trumpets one owns (and I apologise if this has missed the point of the discussion). I know, and have taught, people who have spent vast sums of money collecting some of the finest trumpets in the world, and yet are unable to produce a solid sound or any respectable production on a single one of them.
Perhaps my comments are made out of frustration from my experiences growing up and, even more recently, the times that I have appeared as a 'guest professional' with semi-professional or amateur/community orchestras. But on far too many occasions I have found the section sat around discussing their impressive collections, and sometimes talking disparagingly about brands they regard as 'too mainstream', in what often becomes more of an ego-contest than anything else, only to find that when the baton comes down they all display very mediocre ability both musically and technically.
I don't say this to condescend anyone, or to adopt a position of superiority, but to make the point that (and I'm not suggesting that people here are doing this) the size, expense, or prestige of your collection does not have any bearing on your ability as a musician or trumpet player. Unfortunately in my experience a surprisingly high number of players get that fact a little confused.
I hope this adds to this discussion and makes a point without causing any offence or confrontation. I am very aware that this was not the topic of the post, and only seek to add an opinion that others may find interesting.
All the best to you all
FYI I have
- 4 Bbs (2 are for sale haha)
-1 Eb
-1 Picc
-1 Flugel
-1 Cornet |
I'm a proven good player as some on this forum well know...and I have at least 2 dozen trumpets; from entry-level to pro (Hub Van Laar B6), I don't confuse anything, but as any craftsman, I am not limited to one horn......I love to try & also own "new ones" I have not owned. I have been surprised by some "intermediate" horns, like the Jupiter 606MR which are fantastic horns.....just bought a Schenkelaars I'm dying to have....might play great- might not, but it is a piece of trumpet history I want to own, particularly at an attractive low price........ _________________ Claudio |

Sorry, no Benge. Could I interest you in a really nice 1929 Conn 22B?... _________________ "Brass bands are all very well in their place - outdoors and several miles away ." - Sir Thomas Beecham |

I have started back playing after forty years since college;
I sold my Bach Strad I played in about twenty years ago; wish I hadn't
But I now play an Andreas Eastman Bfl
and have an antique Conn/Ralph Kenny Bfl - restored it from unplayable condition. |

Bach Mt. Vernon 43
Bach early Elkhart 37
Bach NY 37 M bore
Yamaha 734 (school horn)
Bach Philadelphia C
Schilke P5-4
Getzen Eterna Flugel
The early Elkhart Bach is currently for sale, so I guess 6 is the right number for me. _________________ Kevin Peterson

Including me - but also always makes me think how does one store (or afford ...) so many horns?
My list is essentially what is in the signature +2 horns I have in storage but never play. The Yamaha I wrote about a while ago evaporated for some very bizarre reasons on the seller's side but my new (like: brand new from the shop made to my specs - first new horn in 25 years 🍾 and really the best horn I ever played) Martin Schmidt rotary just blows me away.
Happy for the moment - ugh, the flugel should get an upgrade ... and, well, there is this and that with the bass trumpet _________________ 2019 Martin Schmidt eXcellence

Great topic of discussion. What nearly everybody missed though is not just the number of instruments that one owned, but the joy that one got from playing them. I have had a number of trumpets over the years and enjoyed them all. Could I do justice to them and play them like a true pro? No! But it has been fun. Not only did I enjoy them all, but I passed the joy around and gave a few of my trumpets to some deserving young people to help them go further with their music.
The trumpets and cornets I own now are prized and I will continue to enjoy them. When I am ready to go to the big ball room in the sky I will make sure they go to people who will also enjoy them and hopefully use the heck out of them.
Just got a Bach LR19043B. Wow!! it is awesome! Thanks Quin the Eskimo!
It is all about having fun and enjoying life. _________________ agroovin48

I have too many and not enough!
2 LG bore Martin Committees
2 LG bore Martin Custom Committees
1 Mic Gillette .470 bore Martin Committee
1 medium bore Dizzy Committee
1 mid 70's Benge Claude Gordon (I played this in High school).
1 Holton 1948 Model 48 I bought before I got my first Committee.
1 Martin Magna Cornet
1 Kanstul made Besson Brevette Flugelhorn
1 early English Besson Flugelhorn
and 1 Flip Oakes early designed flugelhorn built by Kanstul.... a prototype for the 1525 model.
I did just sell a Carol Brass Flugelhorn!
I wish I could follow Shofarguy's example: one trumpet and one flugelhorn......................
Well, sort of........
