How do you guys maintain all those horns on a regular basis? I get collecting- I used to have a small collection, but it became a real pain to bathe, oil all those valves when I could be spending the valuable free time practicing. And there was no way to really get to know your trumpet when you had another 5 horns competing for your attention.
I am down to 1 good trumpet, 1 good cornet, and a flugelhorn - I don't feel any poorer for it...
It's the same for bikes with me - I have a mountain bike, a cyclocross bike, a road bike, a fixie, and a vintage cruiser bike. That's a lot of tires to keep filled up. Just going for a simple bike ride requires a lot more prep time than if I just had one bike!
... and that's not to mention my wife's and 3 kid's bikes! _________________ Yamaha Xeno 8335G Cornet

I have a very good all-around Bb, a very good C, a so-so Eb/D, and 3 decent older Bb trumpets (one for backup, one for big band, one just because it's 90 years old).
I have numerous cornets and a flugel, too, but they aren't trumpets... _________________ "Brass bands are all very well in their place - outdoors and several miles away ." - Sir Thomas Beecham |

LSOfanboy wrote: | Whilst I am the first to support enthusiasm for the instrument and share a love for trumpets and mouthpieces, it is really an irrelevance how many trumpets one owns (and I apologise if this has missed the point of the discussion). I know, and have taught, people who have spent vast sums of money collecting some of the finest trumpets in the world, and yet are unable to produce a solid sound or any respectable production on a single one of them.
... . But on far too many occasions I have found the section sat around discussing their impressive collections, and sometimes talking disparagingly about brands they regard as 'too mainstream', in what often becomes more of an ego-contest than anything else, only to find that when the baton comes down they all display very mediocre ability both musically and technically. |
I think that the "collecting" is aspirational for the playing. Advertising sell glamor -- the notion that I can be the object of my envy. I want to believe the myth that a Getzen Severinsen, for example, will allow me to channel the Doc.
For all the horns I own, I cannot say that any one of them is holding me back as a student of music. I do find that each has its own personality. Discovering and making the most of that is enjoyable. |
