A few years ago, I heard a trumpet player practicing through my windows.

He did something so beautiful as he played his scales, it haunted me for years. I first tried to write about it in 2012; I finally was able to put it into words in May this year, sent it to The New York Times in June, and in July it was published:

‘Godfather Waltz’

Since then I've befriended the horn player, and when I dragged out my vintage Yamaha cornet to show it to him, he gave me the tips I needed to start playing again in a responsible and careful manner, picking up the tools and equipment I'd need, introducing me to Arban, and getting my embouchure in shape gradually, without ruining it.

Since then, I'm motivated to play more each day, take care of my horn, and have seen a marked difference in my playing. I really haven't played since 1983 or 1984. I'm glad I picked up my Yamaha YCR-231 at Sam Ash a few years ago (with a sweet OHSC). Now that I have a guide, I'm excited to see where I'll go with it.

That's a beautiful article you wrote! Best thing I've read in the NYT in a long time...

Cheers,

John, thank you for your very kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed the story. It was been very satisfying to see the response. I even heard from Nina Rota, the granddaughter of Nino Rota.

With the help of that professional player you befriended, seems you are off to a good start on your comeback.

Good luck from this old comeback player.
