Just a curious question and a good chance to reminisce on your very first trumpet because we all remember the feeling of having a horn of your very own.

First cornet: My father's Olds recording, 1951 model. Still have it.

Bought new with my own money:

Bach 37 strad trumpet, 1980. Still have it.

My dad got me a Conn Director after I started playing in 4th grade. Didn't really think about that horn too much, but it took me a fairly good distance.

Got a new music director in school when I was in grade 8 or 9, I think. The enthusiasm he added kicked me off, as well as the band in general, and he approached me one day asking if I was interested in stepping up.

Got a lacquer Bach Strad, early Elkhart in February 1970. Love that horn, am very proud to have it to this day. This is the horn that I regard as my "first" even tho its not.

My first horn was a minty (used) Conn 38A Connstellation short-model cornet. Great horn for a 7-year-old! I still have it, and it's still a great horn.

Conn Director Cornet. Donated it to a student in need when I finished college.

Had a Bach Mercedes II that was terrible.

Got a brand new Bach Strad 37 in high school in ‘72 to replace it which I still have today.

A horribly dented Holton student model with a twist in the leadpipe, leaky valves, and frozen tuning slides. I never figured out which model. It was soon replaced by a brand new Bundy.

1969 or '70 Holton Collegiate student model (602?) lacquer. Good horn, overall. My parents bought it for $150.00 through a rent-to-own program at a short-lived local music store. The shop had a resident professional clarinet player who taught lessons, of which I took a few, and directed a band made up of his students there at the store.

There is one reason that I practice: to be ready at the downbeat when the final trumpet sounds.

First horn I ever played: DIY hosaphone
First real instrument I ever played: my dad's Olds Ambassador
For sixth grade band (first time I played consistently): my mom's Bach Strad cornet
First horn that belonged to me: a used Blessing intermediate trumpet in this case.

My first trumpet was a 1968-ish Olds Ambassador Trumpet. That trumpet is long gone, but I still fond memories of it. As a result, a few years back I purchased and restored a 1957 Olds Ambassador Trumpet.

1940's King Silver tone cornet. Still remember the beautiful engraving on the bell and the gold wash bell. The tweed case was bigger than I was.

Sixty odd years later I play a Selmer K-Modified trumpet and Kanstul 1525 flugelhorn.

My first trumpet was a Los Angeles Olds Mendez, mostly in raw brass, from the early 50s that my Dad got from a New Orleans pawn shop. I am not sure if he realized that this was a seriously awesome professional level trumpet for a 10 year old or if the price was just right. Hurricane Betsy took this horn away in 1965 a few days before my 14th Birthday or I would still be playing it today! My first new horn was a LA Benge that I bought new in 1971 and I am playing once again almost every day after an Osmun/Jim Becker valve job earlier this year . I still would like to have a replacement LA Olds Mendez before I can't work a trumpet anymore.

Started on an unknown cornet, presumably an Amati.

First own horn: 1980 Blessing Scholastic, bought by my parents. Still have it.

Ah! Another poll!

4-8th grades, Conn Director trumpet, of course!
Sold that puppy to a guy in college that wanted a gig beater.

9th grade-1st year in college, Holton 51LB. Still have that horn, still plays good.

College Sophomore-graduation, King Silver Flair. Then a string of Benges, Leblancs, and Getzens...

A Selmer radial 99, purchased second hand in 1977, for all of $120. Still have it. Great trumpet, but take a lot to fill.

cheers

An Olds Ambassador that started as a grade school rental (thanks, Mom & Dad). Still have it though unplayed for a long time.
