After playing a Bach 72 at a recent store I had my eyes open for a 72 in the discount bins. As luck would have it, a local estate sale firm had a mid 60s, 26xxx Bach 72 out for bid. I went by and checked it out. All slides were stuck, exterior was spotty, but it was fairly pristine obviously having sat for years (if not decades). BUT, it did have an original case with exterior leather cover that was in great shape, and a key. It also had a couple early Bach mouthpieces- 7c, 5c. Inside the horn are some old accessories, but most interesting was a glass dropper bottle of Slikstuf. I won the bid, but likely paid about what it was worth (so much for a discount, everyone knows about these horns)

After getting a professional referral on a vintage restoration guy (in CO!), he gave it some love- valve alignment, minor dent repair, felt replacements, chem cleaning, and lacquer removal. It came out unbelievable. Truly a unique opportunity to get a player. What is truly amazing is the compression is perfect, the valves look brand new.

I only wish I could find information on the original owner, unfortunately they don't have it. Instead I'll just have to get a copy of the shop card.

That’s a very rare Mt. Vernon Vindobona. One of just 125 made in Mt. Vernon. Great find.

Can you clarify where you see that this is a Vindabona model? I remember reading that this was made to sound rotary-trumpet like? is that accurate? Thanks for any additional information on this horn!

Bill, what tells you that it's a Vindabona?

Thanks,

Part of my research was documenting the serial numbers of the Vindobona trumpets. The shop card for 26293 says Vindobona across the top. Mt. Vernon production stopped around 26700 so it’s also one of the very last Mt. Vernon’s. 72 .020 lightweight bell, 43 pipeis unmarked because it is standard. Valve section should just say ML and the telescoping tuning slide should measure .440-.448.-.453 This is a good find on several accounts.

It seems even the mouthpieces are between 1965-1969, per the following spec: "VINCENT BACH CORP" (no period) = 1965-1969

Thanks everyone for the insight, much appreciated, what a treasure.
