I had to clean an old Bach bass trumpet today and was reminded of the horrible smell of Slikstuff. It was dirty to the point of black water coming out after repeated scrubbings. And the smell...something to... hopefully forget, but I can't - it's Slikstuff!

Any other nominations for the worst smelling valve oils?

I'm not a fan of the heavily scented ones - Zaja - there are enough bad smell at gigs, I don't need to smell your fruity tootie valve oil across the section.

Back in the day, we ran a gallon of Kerosene through a series of filters.. super cheap and worked great but the fumes were terrible.

For SLIDES, not valves (well, depends on the horn):

Marvel Mystery Oil, the stinkiest stuff on earth!

Makes those slides serve as intonation aids, like they were intended! Cheap, available, and noticeable! Opens your sinuses! Gets you noticed at gigs...

Oils can go bad with age. I don't know technically what happens, when they do go bad, they smell horrible. Even Al Cass will start smelling bad. Suggestion: if your oil has gone bad, don't use it!

I agree: Holton. Like you filled up your diesel car too much.

What valve oil was it during the 80s/90s that smelled like a skunk? Was it the stock Yamaha oil? I can't remember, but that was bad!

I used to make valve oil by mixing kerosene and sewing machine oil. Worked quite well but smelled so strongly that it was only safe for outdoor use....

Not valve oil but in orchestra, we used to have a super smelly slide grease that we'd put on each other's trumpets. Wish I remembered the name of it

Nothing smells worse than Bach oil. After 40 years in health care I can attest to its nasal hair crisping qualities.

I still have one full and one mostly full bottle of SlikStuff I bought where you work.

It does smell.

Holton Electric Valve Oil. Kerosine smell. But I find it rather endearing, as a Viet Vet it smells like victory....

It must have been at Larry's old shop in San Mateo, they haven't made the stuff in years - good riddance!

I used winterized diesel fuel when I was in undergrad and couldn't afford valve oil. I could stink up a rehearsal room better than a boiled-egg-and-burrito lunch.

Nope. It was in Hornucopia. Larry was gone. It could have been leftover stock that was found and put out.
