How to use the jump to page table of contents in your free New Arban book.
Pick music that has a usable top note for you and work many different parts of the book for variety. Then go up a step.

Its certainly a generous act, and I think there are a lot of players who will benefit immensely from the availability of this material.
Whilst I personally don't like to 'read' exercises in every key (I tend to take one and transpose it around mentally) I think it is very useful for younger players who are less familiar with the 12 major keys to be able to read exercises in every key, just in the manner that you have presented them.
One question that springs to mind however, is the issue of 'overkill'. My personal feeling is that writing extended scale exercises ascending beyond High G (double G, whatever you want to call it) starts to become somewhat academic- I certainly don't think I know a (professional) player who would sit and practice Arban exercises articulated up to double As, Bs and Cs. In my opinion you book would have been every bit as good/useful (and more concise) without including those. I'd be very interested (and please note that this is an open and genuine question) to know what place you think those extreme high-register exercises serve in your book, and whether you encourage your students to pursue them.
FWIW I would have said a player who can articulate a scale exercise cleanly up to a high G really does not need to go any further and should be spending their time practicing myriad other elements to playing.
Please don't miss the tone of gratitude and respect here, as well as curiosity. There is no intention of criticism.
All the best |

I have some students that have played both the Bach Brandenburg #2 and the Michael Haydn Concerto in concerts.
The ability to articulate above High Concert F is important for that.
Tonguing high is also a reason why they can play those things.
Have a great weekend. _________________ Clint 'Pops' McLaughlin

Thanks !
There are not many other useful words here... this is so generous of you.
I downloaded it and quickly browsed through it. I don't know if I'll ever make to page 984...some of them look actually kinda hard to play !
Now... wait, there IS a page 985 in fact. Mmmh, I wonder what's on that last page...Maybe I'll try to play all the others before I get to the last one !
Best regards, |

Thank you for taking the time to answer, I really appreciate it.
FWIW I have performed the Brandenburg (professionally) and never found the need for this, but each to their own and I respect the intention.
All the best, I'm sure your book will be hugely beneficial to so many players! |
