Hey all - I was wondering what type of mute is in the bell of the trumpets in this video, at 3:18 or so (really good shot of it at 3:40). I'm playing it in my jazz band and have the plunger bit but am not sure if I have the other piece. We don't play much of this sort of stuff, but rather things written in the last 10 years or so, so this is my first time really needing to produce this sound.
Here's the video (the link starts at 3:18)

The music just says 'plunger' and gives us the wa's and +/o on each note.
Thanks!
(Bonus points if you post a link to where I can buy one before my concert in a few weeks)[/youtube] _________________ "Lesser artists borrow; great artists steal." ~Igor Stravinsky |

pixie (basically a small straight mute)

Bonus = Amazon.com "H&M Pixie"
You'll want a plunger too - most hardware stores. But if you want an excellent one look for a Mutec Plunger Mute _________________ Freelance Performer/Educator

It's very, very common to simply use plunger (or equivalent) alone for this section of this particular tune. If the arranger had wanted pixie+plunger, they probably would have indicated so. I would ask your director before investing in a pixie.
That said, the aforementioned Denis Wick straight mute for Eb trumpet is an affordable option that I've found works pretty well. (It seems to my I heard that the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra guys were using these for a time.)
I find the Humes and Berg pixie mute to be super squirrely from a resistance and intonation perspective. If you opt for that you may need to experiment with filing the corks or making other alterations to get it to work well:

Finally, I really like the Facet pixie and use it a lot for this type of application:

Removing the tube inside the Pixie helps, some.
Finding the right seating (depth into bell which is dependent on cork height) is fussy and not totally satisfactory -- especially if trying to use it in different horns.
I hadn't seen the Facet Pixie -- thanks for that info
