What are some of your favorite smaller shop horn makers? From Tennessee and have played a few Blackburn’s that I really like. Any other ones to keep my eyes out for???

The Ken Larson horns I've tried play surprisingly well.

Schilke qualifies as a fairly small shop, in my opinion.

Michael Thomas Music is the outlet for The Burbank Trumpet line

Kanstul Musical Instruments is a large small factory which sells their own line of brass instruments and build instruments for many other brands.

This group make trumpets, cornets and flugelhorn which work in all venues and styles and should be considered "mainstream" in terms of sound

Harrelson makes custom trumpets which offer unique, innovative solutions to traditional acoustic challenges.

Flip Oakes designs and sells Wild Thing Band Instruments which include his signature Wild Thing trumpet, flugelhorn and cornets, plus his C Trumpet, Bb Celebration, Legend and Inspiration models.

Tony Scodwell makes fine Bb trumpets and flugelhorn by hand in Las Vegas.

Obviously Roy Lawler's horns , i own two Bb's and one cornet and I use to own three more Bb's, , today are collectable , only 1550 horns in the 35 years that Roy was made trumpets , cornets and Flugels.

Getzen Eterna line: Great horns for the right price

Easy to play, great sounding and the best valves on the market: What else do you want

Are you asking about horn makers or horn bands?

Eclipse - especially the current stuff (not quite as keen on the older bell-tuned stuff)

This is, probably understandably, a very US-centric set of responses so far.

There are many many smaller makers in Europe and the UK who are deserving of recognition as well. These are the workshops I have visited (factories doesn't fit the bill at all) and always been impressed with what I have seen.

Thein. In Bremen in Germany. Hand built, customised to the Nth degree instruments. Their trumpets are to die for. I play on their Bb/A piston piccolo, 4 valve C trumpet (converts to D & Eb) and their corno da caccia.

Visiting their workshop, I had a few things adjusted, and was given the open display cabinet treatment. Essentially, grab a horn and play it. While their Bb's don't grab me, there was a 4 valve rotary which was just astounding, as was their Schilke E3L clone. As they customise SO much, you can never be sure what you are getting. My picc came with a pretty odd setup, but a few emails later, I got some bits to try out, and voila! It's simply amazing now.

Egger. In Basel is another small, very high end maker. I have an early baroque trumpet and a Galileo rotary Bb. (They ake both brands) Superb instruments.

Schagerl. In Mank in Austria. Simply wow, even if a few of their very early horns were made by... Zig Kanstul. (You can't deny all the common parts) I have a rotary C which is the essence of Germanic sounding trumpets. His designs are fantastic, and they are very welcoming.

There are dozens more...

cheers

Andy

I would definitely say that the Eterna Severinson is one of the best out there. Also, any of the 1960's Olds Operas or Ambassadors play pretty well. Really like some of the stuff Kanstul and Lawler put out too!

Money permitting I would have one of the rotaries from here: https://www.martin-schmidt-potsdam.de/en/instrumentenbau/

Plus I only once had a chance to test a del Quadro Bb piston trumpet and did not buy it - HUGE mistake

Great horn, not sure if it’s a “smaller shop” though.

Austin Winds in Austin Tx. Unique horns with darker richer core tone, remarkable flexibility and response yet stand up to being pushed without breaking. Fabrication is by Kanstul & Taylor, but designs are unique to AW.

(Doesn't get much smaller - there are <10 copies of my Stage 466)

I have both, old and new, and they're fantastic. The new custom Enigma I received five days ago has incredible pitch/response/versatility of tonal color/et al. Even the older C and Bb that I have are great horns.

Oops! In my enthusiasm for the Getzen Eterna horns I forgot about that

Anyway, never tried one but I think it's very interesting: http://www.jaegerbrass.com/products/trumpets.html

Otherwise from the old world: https://www.spiri.ch/spiri-vario-trompete

Very nice people as well

I also love Getzen horns and I believe that is the most underrated pro and student horns that made in U.S

Not to derail the thread, but what was wrong with the older bell-tuned trumpets?
