So I'm in the middle of the out chorus on 'Sposin and my 2nd slide rockets across the room. Very surprising. What to do? Slide grease? Super glue? Orange marmalade?

Have a good tech expand the inner slide tubes to fit tight again.

Thanks! (In the meantime, marmalade is doing the trick.)

Hello Jim!

To answer your question.... Yes !!

I was a senior in HS., it was during the Spring Concert 1967 at Fallbrook HS in Fallbrook Ca. I was playing a Olds Super that my dad bought me in 1962. I had a little 6 pc. Dixieland band in HS, called the Dixie Lads, and we were playing Rosetta when this happened while I was playing my solo. The best part is it's recorded on the LIVE 1967 LP the school had made that year. I still have the recording, and should get it out and give it a listen again. I really don't remember what I did, but after the tune was to locate it and shove it back in. It's something I've never forgotten. It's great to hear it has happened to someone else. All these years I thought I was the only one... Ha....

Take Care,

Flip Oakes

Back in October one of my students that plays in a brass band with me had just purchased a BRAND NEW Eclipse Cornet. I asked at one rehearsal if we could swap just so I could check out the new horn while he borrowed my Besson Prestige.
We were playing an arrangement of "Psychopomp"...not really a chart associated with british brass bands...there is an extremely heavy accent on just a simple second ledger line A above the staff... when we got there and I hit it to my horror the 2nd slide shot across the room...the whole band saw and heard it and we had to stop...there was much laughter...i ran over to pick up the slide fearing the worst....it was thank God undamaged lol.
My student of course yelled jokingly across the band "can I pull your 2nd slide out and throw it on the ground"

Jim, as an interim measure, rub some wax on the moving parts.

Good tip. Not as sticky as marmalade!

I did the same thing, twice in a rehearsal last month for the "Winborne's Led Zeppelin" show. Using an old Schilke B3 that I've had lying around for years. I "fixed" it the easy way when I went home between rehearsal and gig- out a very slight flat spot on the ferrule with a plastic mallet and it's stayed ever since. Doesn't seem to leak, I'll have my tech guy look at it when I get a break. Have to admit it suprised the hell out of the person on the right twice to have it fly past him. Would've been more difficult in the show because stage was dark... Just another one to add to the books.

This all reminds me of a story I heard Wayne Bergeron tell:

He said that as a freshman at his high school in California he blew so hard he herniated his neck and developed a bulge he was self conscious about so to help cover it up his aunt made him a choker like surfers were wearing at the time.

Everything was cool until he stepped up at a concert to wail on La Virgin Macarena and the choker exploded and showered the audience with little white beads!

The audience thought it was part of the show and gave him an extra big hand!

Never the second valve crook for me, but the dump crook on the third used to pop off regularly for me. Normally after picking up the horn from its stand and returning the drooped slide before playing.

That error has the added ping as the crook hits the bell.

I heard that Mark Clodfelter had his second valve assembly detach from his horn during an orchestra concert. He held it in place while continuing to play to finish the show.

Yes, mine came out during a piece of Gabrieli, in a concert.
A great lesson in why you should always learn every available alternative fingering

Once, I took my horn out of its Torpedo and blew a few notes, only to find the 1st slide missing. Found it in the bottom of the Torpedo. Good reason to check all your parts before playing!

Never the 2nd, that I recall. I have had the 3rd dump slide pop off.

If a good lube like anhydrous lanolin doesn't hold it then get a tech to open up the tubes slightly and be done with the problem.

The other day I sat testing my brand new Yamaha 6335RC. Suddenly I hear a "pop" and something "touches down" on the floor. Much to my dismay and shock I find 2 nd slide on the floor. Putting it back again I find that it doesn´t slide as easily as before. However a light twist puts it back in order. Pwew!
Talk about compression (=realizing why my old King feels a bit heavy these days......)and imagine my horror, brand new, gulp!
Maybe a rubberband might prevent future disasters?

Not if it is silver. Rubber bands can have sulphur in them. Tarnish on silver is due to sulphur.

I used to convert a lot of Bach C trumpets to tunable bells (when that was in fashion) and one of the things I always added was a stop screw and waterkey on the third slide as Bach did not fit these as standard. I also took many dents out of Bach third slides too. At one of the ITG conferences I was at, I asked Ted Wagoner (head man at Bach) why they didn't fit a stop screw or waterkey on the C trumpet third slide. While he was explaining to me the reason ("Vincent Bach didn't fit these so we don't now") the third slide of the new Bach C I was holding vertically hit the floor. After picking it up I asked Ted if my point was made. Good laughs all around.

You should have asked for a discount due to damage.
