Hi,

Lately I have enjoyed some soundtracks with beautiful trumpet playing, like the Bodyguard ( Silvestri but not the commercial CD with Whitney Houston ). Lots of gorgeous playing by Gary Grant.
Another that comes to my mind is Born on 4th July ( Williams ). Tim Morrison does an great job on this one too .

Was wondering if you had some other to recommend ?

Thanks

The soundtrack to the recent movie 'Solo: A Star Wars Story'. I'm fairly sure its Phil Cobb (sounding incredible) on first trumpet.

Clearly there are hundreds and hundreds of other fantastic soundtracks (the entire Star Wars continuum is not a bad place to start) from past and present, but straight off the top of my head, a recent soundtrack with exceptional trumpet playing the entire way through, that film would be my first shout!

All the best

"The Incredibles" with Wayne Bergeron and his buddies.

And "Lincoln" with NY Philharmonic principal trumpet Chris Martin playing the closing credits solo.

Just happened to look it up today after watching Chinatown... I suspected Uan Rasey as I'm sure I've probably wondered or asked who it was years ago. "Chinatown" Uan Rasey trumpet solos.

The Dick Cheney biopic, Vice, has a recurring solo trumpet line that caught my ear. Also some nice funky stuff elsewhere in the score.
I can't find anywhere who was performing on the soundtrack - does anyone here know?

Jason Evans
Kate Moore
Gareth Small
Sebastian Philpott
Andy Crowley
Phil Cobb (I think he was only on for one of the sessions)
Paul Mayes
Daniel Newell
James Fountain
Pat White

Are all listed performers. I had thought that Alistair Mackie was involved too, but is not listed. Maybe that is my mistake or perhaps he was overlooked in the listing.

Many thanks, LSOfanboy! I know half those names, the others I shall look up. May I ask, where did you find this listing? Film credits seem to list list everyone involved with shooting and production down to the caterers; it's a shame that musicians don't get a look-in.
Cheers!

Well, truth be told, there are actually other youtube videos with 'Associated performers' listed in the description, so that is where the complete list comes from.

That being said, I know a few of the players on that session and have heard some stories about it (not for bad reasons) so I could have told you most of the players listed just from word of mouth.

Sorry to state the obvious, but two of the most incredibly successful film composers on the scene today are themselves trumpet players, with almost-all of their soundtracks featuring the trumpet as something of a narrator:

Terence Blanchard was finally nominated for his first OSCAR this year, and he has some thirty years of brilliant film scores. Not for nothing, but I've had the privilege of hearing him in a small-group jazz setting, and the term 'raise the roof' was invented for the energy and authority of his trumpet playing.

He and Mark Isham both share the ability to almost 'speak' through the horn, and, as I said, many of their most successful scores have their trumpet as something of a musical narrator.

The legendary film composer, Ennio Morricone, was himself a trumpeter. Most of the "Spaghetti Westerns" that he scored for Leone - and that later directors and composers copied from them - have the trumpet as a 'character' almost in the sense of a Wagnerian Leitmotif.

IMDB would be a better resource than youtube - find a score you enjoyed and discover which other works of cinema may have been scored by the same composer.

Sadly, Don Ellis only lived to score The French Connection - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVQF-Uz2pFQ - but it is an interesting example that stands as much a testament to his work as his recorded legacy.

And, finally - Miles's Davis has one score: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wc4tT-55ZzI

Happy listening, happy practicing!

+1

Seeing the great genius Morricone live in concert is something every trumpet player has to do in life!

I go almost every year in Paris to see him.

Cheers

The two trumpet players credited on that session are Conte Candoli and Bud Brisbois.

There are two versions of the same theme, the opening with the vocals (I maintain that's Conte playing there in the middle register) and the instrumental closing (that fast/high stuff is almost certainly Brisbois).

Some folks maintain it's Brisbois in both cases. /shrug
