I just finished reading Sam Noto's new book..."Sam Noto, A Life In Jazz". VERY interesting and entertaining!! I went to Fredonia St. Univ. College from '66-'70. Since Sam was from Buffalo and was good friends with the teacher that led our award winning jazz ensemble he was a legend in our area. GREAT player and a VERY nice guy. He also has a bunch of stuff on YouTube under his own name. Check him out!
That was one of my FAVORITE albums way back in my high school days. The rhythm section does not suck...Good stuff! _________________ Scott Apelgren

Sam and Red are/were both monster players. I have as many albums/CDs by each as I can find, and feel lucky to have known both of these gents. If you can find Sam's independent records, do so - they are amazing. (Theya re REALLY hard to find, and were a limited printing back in the day). _________________ BKA! Red Rodney's "Then and Now" is a great record! I transcribed a few of his solos on that one...
He also played on the soundtrack to Clint Eastwood's movie, "Bird"...more sweet stuff.
Have to check out Sam Noto, thanks!
Man, do I love that film. The story of how Bird brought him down south, way south for a tour during a time when mixed groups simply did not play. So Bird says, "We'll call you Albino Red!" Hysterical, and on they went. Red was so underrated.

I used to have one of Noto's albums on vinyl on the Xanadu label.
Interesting head - Brownie's solo harmonized...some pretty high-intensity articulation going on there, too. _________________ Jeff Helgesen

My father had some Red Rodney recordings, mixed in with his expansive collection of trumpet and cornet players. Really good player who probably isn't discussed as often as he should be. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away."
