TRUMPETER PETER MASSEURS (74) DIED
Trumpeter Peter Masseurs passed away last Saturday at the age of 74. For years he was the first trumpeter at the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Masseurs started his career at the Marinierskapel. In 1970 he became a member of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 1982 of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He was considered one of the best trumpeters in the world.

"Fatty, warm tone"
On the Volkskrant website , oboist Werner Herbers, who was Masseurs' colleague for years in the Concertgebouw Orchestra, says: "He had a greasy, warm tone. He was phenomenal and played very melodic. Conductor Bernard Haitink was so fond of him that he even returned to Masseurs after his retirement for concerts. '

A versatile musician
Masseurs also had an international career as a soloist. He also played at the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, the Asko Ensemble, the Schönberg Ensemble and the Ebony Band. He was also principal subject teacher at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.

Under the spell of the trumpet
In 1996, the NPS program 'In the spell of' made an episode about the trumpet, in which Masseurs and jazz trumpet player Eric Vloeimans were extensively interviewed about their instrument. View the program here:
