My 92 year old mother decided I needed to be in Omaha for her birthday on Monday. Always the dutiful son I complied.
According to my sister Omaha had a high of 2 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday. Possible warming on Friday.
The flight is San Jose, Ca to LAX to Omaha. After pushing back from the gate the pilot comes on and says that due to weather issues in LA we will have to sit on the tarmac for 20 minutes before taking off.
No problem, my wife woke me up at 4:00 AM so I planned on a nap anyway.
As we get about halfway to LA we run into turbulence like I haven’t experienced in a commercial jet. Still no problem, I can sleep through it.
So I am sleeping, watching the insides of my eyelids, when suddenly I am awakened by a bright red flash and the sound of something hitting the plane. I ask a fellow passenger and he states we just were hit by lightening.
After more turbulence we drop out of the cloud layer and things smooth out resulting in a good landing.
That plane is turning around to Seattle and I am to leave on the next plane at the same gate. Nice.
Except the boarding process for Seattle for some reason is afu. It turns out they are inspecting the plane for lightning damage.
They determine the plane is unsafe and deplane all the passengers. Around this time the signs on the same gate say my flight is boarding at the gate the Seattle plane is still occupying.
After about fifteen minutes after beginning to rebook all the passengers on the Seattle flight they change their mind and re-board the plane and leave.
My flight is now inbound but is delayed. At this moment the flight is delayed 3+ hours.
On top of this I decided to not bring snacks, never again, in an attempt to keep the weight down. And I skipped breakfast expecting to purchase it during my 2 hour layover.
Here I am stuck in a satellite terminal with the only food at crappy premade sandwich shop with $3.00 sodas.

Finally boarded at 3:30 PM. Deplaned at 4:00 after taxing to the runway. The pilots timed out and we needed a new crew.
Now, 4:10, we are back aboard waiting for paperwork. |

sorry for your pain. next time pocket trumpet and long tones?
insider information: this has not been a good week for the airlines. super cold weather in the midwest is freezing water lines on airplanes, prohibiting service trucks from either starting at all or their hydraulic systems (such as a catering truck) are frozen. Lots of delays and aircraft with minimal food service.
And be thankful your mother doesn't live in Grand Rapids or Buffalo. |

Glad I don't travel much anymore, and my last few flights were to MS before my dad passed away. I can commiserate; hope it ends soon! And hope your mother is well! _________________ "After silence, that which best expresses the inexpressible, is music" - Aldous Huxley |

I was thinking the same thing only forget the long tones and impress your fellow passengers by playing some tunes like 'Fly Me to the Moon', 'Come Fly With Me', etc. ... then top it off with some Maynard... 'Gonna Fly Now!! _________________ MH |

Got in only six hours late.
After the final boarding it took 30 minutes to do the paperwork. I’m guessing they needed to recalculate loading and fuel levels as well as switch the pilots names on the paperwork.
Then 20 minutes sitting on the taxiways and moving occasionally.
Then 15 minutes in the takeoff queue at the end of the runway.
But it was a balmy 12 degrees Fahrenheit outside. |

I walked outside last evening, it was -5 and it felt warm.
I guess that's what a 3-4 days of -15 highs and -25 or -35 lows will do to you. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

Today the high was predicted as 35 degrees. Tonight the predicted low was 37. |

I'd probably need shorts and sandals for that kind of heat wave. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet
