Well,
I was experimenting. I placed my lips in the mouthpiece. I made an extreme pucker. Naturally my corners were brought in closer. The notes went higher as I pushed the lips out. I played a double C. I couldn't control what came out of the horn. Is this type of pucker legitimate? Now the Caruso question? Will the Caruso bring this type of playing under control or should I never ever try that again as my lips will roll over and die? Or more likely is puckering in such a manner harder to control?

Tim,
"Now the Caruso question? Will the Caruso bring this type of playing under control or should I never ever try that again as my lips will roll over and die? "
No, have no fear of damaging your lips, if you don't engage in going for the highest possible pitch too much. If you were to sit there and stab away at trying to get a high note, for long periods of time, you would probably start incorporating some bad habits into your playing. Nothing that couldn't be fixed, though.
But if you just go for this once in awhile (to satisfy that urge) nothing bad is going to come of it. Eventually it will all be connected, the low and high.
Regards,
Charly |

Is it normal to push the lips out to increase range? _________________ All murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets.

Tim,
You want to be sure that you are actually pushing them forward and that it doesn't just feel that way because of just holding them firmly in place.
I don't know if pushing the lips forward is abnormal or not. If someone does it successfully then I guess it would be normal for that person.

We'll have to get a Maggio expert to comment on that. |
