Was wondering if anyone had any experience of removing a permanent retainer that they had fixed to their top teeth? I’ve had mine for years, and it’s always been somewhat bothersome, but I’ve made it work fine enough over the years. I do often wonder if it could affect the clarity of articulation, since it is rather high on my top teeth, virtually on the gum line.

If anybody has had theirs removed (or had a student who had one removed), did you notice any benefit to having it off? Did your teeth end up later shifting, and did it drastically affect your playing in any way?

I have had one for close to 20 years now. I found success using the TOL (Tongue on Lips) method from the Balanced Embouchure. I do have great difficulty multiple tonguing, but my playing now doesn't really call for it.

The person to talk to is your dentist or a specialist orthodontist. Removing appliances is easy for the trained person. Not so much if you are intent on a DIY experience. Book that dental visit well beforehand if you do...

That said, anything in your mouth is going to have some sort of effect on your playing. We have zero idea of where the retainers are and why they are there, so no one can tell you what will happen, apart from you know who... that dentist. By and large, ALL my students who have had braces, retainers, etc come out the other side and get their playing in order and improve. There should be no reason you can’t also do this.

There are some general principles in orthodontics and medicine which can helps I’ve you some ideas. One is that these appliances move your teeth by bending the bone. (That’s why it HURTS!) it takes at least 6 weeks before things settle down, so if thee are no other underlying issues, you can suspect your teeth are not going to move if things are removed.

Another principle, well worth repeating is that you don’t ask a boy to do a man’s job, take a knife to a gun fight, be the lawyer who represents himself, etc. etc. etc.

Just go to your dentist and start the conversation with them!

Cheers

Andy
