I recently acquired a valve trombone and was wondering if anyone had mouthpiece advice for the occasional doubler? I'm figuring there's people here that slum it down in the low notes! : D
Thanks! _________________ MH |

Bach 12C for trombone. Good for switching back and forth from trumpet.
Bach 6 1/2 AL if you need a bigger cup for a better low register/darker sound. A few years ago I bought a new Chinese knock-off of this MP for less than 10 bucks on Ebay, and it works very well on my euphonium. I have the Bach version of this size, but, unfortunately, it is large shank and will not fit my instrument. |

IMHO (based upon my humble experience and a lot of tries) the best choice for the occasional doubler is the Parduba three stars (double cup) _________________ Mikel Dupac / LawlerC7 / CarolBrass flugelhorn + pockets / Olds Super / Conn New Wonder cornet / Music is the healing force of the Universe |

It will really depend on your chops. Generally a smaller diameter trombone mouthpiece will work for doubling, but I know guys who use more standard trombone pieces as well. Back in my doubling days I used a Giardinelli 6D that came with a beater trombone I picked up in a pawn shop. I couldn't begin to tell you the dimensions, but it is smaller than a Bach 12C, which is a pretty small piece by regular trombonists' standards, but way too big for me. _________________ Bryan Fields

The Parduba is really easy to play, that's true. The problem is that it sounds horrible and it's impossible to play in tune with it. When you see the cup it's easy to see why. The upside is that you can play Double High Bb's (or dubba C as some of you like to refer to it) all day every day.
The Schilke 40b is nice. It's essentially a very, very narrow trombone mouthpiece. It gets an ok sound and you can play reasonable in tune unless you try to play in the bass clef staff.
If you're serious about adding the valve bone to your arsenal as a double, I would suggest getting a 12c and learning how to play it. You'll get a better sound and you'll be able to play somewhat in tune in the lower register (valve bones are out of tune with themselves - big time. Yes, all of them). _________________ www.mikesailors.com |

Thanks a ton guys! I really had no idea where to even start. At this point the main purpose will be for low budget studio overdub situations where one guy can be a horn section. I can't imagine that I'd have the time to even remotely approach being legit but I can usually fake it fairly well! _________________ MH |

11C or 12C. I'm partial to 11C. (I play slide though, not valve) _________________ Isaiah 40:8

This is what I do. I have a 12C on the rare occasion I play trombone, and a 6 1/2 AL for my baritone and a Wick Steven Mead Ultra SM6U for my euph if I need a deeper tone. _________________ King Super 20 Trumpet; Sov 921 Cornet

My Couesnon 3 OK, I use it on bass trumpet but should work fine on valve bone as well. _________________ 2019 Martin Schmidt eXcellence

Speaking of the 12C trombone mouthpiece, I have a Mt. Vernon 12C listed on eBay if anyone's interested. _________________ Bryan Fields

If you're like me and can't even make a buzz on a mouthpiece larger than a trumpet sized one, you might want something super custom. I think I've seen maybe Frost or someone else make a deep trumpet cup with a trombone backbore and the reverse a trombone cup on a trumpet shank. I'm sure it would be quite expensive though. _________________ 1981 Bb Bach Stradivarius 37/25 ML raw - Laskey 60C

The Piece it came with is a Reynolds 8b... Seems a little big (and kinda nasty looking), but I just freed the slides, oiled it up and blew out a few cob webs!
Probably won't get to spend any quality time with it for a few days but I'm sure I'll want to try a few different mouthpieces out when I get a chance. Seems like I might actually be able to get something useful out of it though! _________________ MH |

I really like a King M21 or similar for valve trombone, gives me a good balance of depth for low notes and a rim that supports for higher ranges. I've tried some Rudy Muck trombone mouthpieces with valve trombones that I really liked too, very comfortable if you are switching instruments mid-performance. _________________ Www.Stevenplaysbrass.com

Interesting thread. I doubt that there are many guys around with lots of experience in this field. I played slide trombone for 25 years, now I play the trumpet. On slide my mp was a Bach 11 no letter. Recently I bought a York valve trombone for fun and for playing scales on something different than the tiring trumpet. On the valve trombone both the high and the low are more difficult. I didn't play trombone since 1978 or so but the low notes are there but the valve horn makes them little responsive. I can play up till (concert) high D but above that it's a bit clumsy. Cause the valve T is only for fun I ordered an A&s 12C mp because I had the feeling that the 11 no letter was too big for the obviously small bore York. My slide trombone was a Conn 6H, also quite small.
Still I hope that the 12C will make the York more responsive. Thomann mailed me that I can expect the 12C Monday evening so I will tell you later about the rate of success. |

I play a Jupiter 12C with my Jupiter Bb valve Trombone. It works very well. Better than the Schilke 40C sound wise. But I use the 40C with my Alto valve trombone because...it works better than the 12C!
Édit: sorry for the mistake, it is a 40b

Al Cass made a piece like that as well. |

I had luck doubling with a Bach 12EW on valve t'bone in a jazz/rock/pop band (and a Holton 1½G on bass t'bone on the same gig), switching from a Ratzenberger Al Hirt JetTone

I play trumpet for the most part, but play trombone in some situations. Back when trombone was my primary instrument I played a Bach 6.75C or a no-letter Bach 7 mouthpiece depending on the gig, but now that trombone is a doubler I've downsized.
Now that I limit my trombone playing to rock, reggae, polka, and the occasional trad jazz gig I use a fairly new Jet-Tone BM mouthpiece, which is somewhat comparable to a Bach 12E. I use the Jet-Tone mouthpiece with my Bach 16 with both the valve and slide sections, as well as my Holton Superbone.
On the rare occasions I play my Olds Studio baritone I use a Bach 8.5BW. _________________ J. Notso Nieuwguyski |

While I can only say this from my short stint on bass trumpet thus far, a Giardinelli 12C I'm finding to be difficult to play. Or at least seemingly difficult to adjust aperature so extremely. I have a Schilke 40B on the way for comparisons sake. I'll let you know my impressions since I am also in a similar selection process currently. It's still weird picking up the normal Bb after using a bigger horn, it's like picking up a piccolo trumpet |
