Does anyone have ideas as to where to find 1st valve slide thumb saddles in raw brass for older horns? These are the kind attached to a curved rod that solder to the end of the first valve slide crook. Mouthpiece Express used to carry them made by Bach but they are now listed as unavailable.

Thanks!

Bill

Hello,
Allied supplied them to shops as I recollect. Or you can have a tech reverse the tubes. Some of the older style, solder to the end are not the right length.

Off topic, but in at least two cases, I found that older horns that were not designed with a first slide saddle didn’t really need it. YMMV of course.

My trumpet, a King Super 20, was not designed with a first valve ring. It was literally slapped on by the factory later when requested when ordered. You will find horns in both configurations, with and without. Because of the slapped on nature of the first valve ring, several people have opined aftermarket. It is not. It is factory stock. Compare the pictures:

The reason many older horns do not need the first valve ring is because they were manufactured with a slightly longer first valve slide so 1+2 is not so sharp, but not too long so 1 alone is not noticeably flat.

Those hooks are still listed as available by Allied. I have a few in stock.

I agree with Brad. A lot of those older horns had no notes in tune except open, and slotted wide enough that you could lip them all into tune except perhaps that low C#. Nowadays they seem to be designed that more notes are right on, the horn slots tighter, and you have to adjust your problem notes with the slides.

I personally learned on the earlier type, I am very proficient in playing in tune, and cannot fathom why the second type is more popular today.

Allied listed them as available recently, maybe Mouthpiece Express doesn't stock them now. I had a customer who brought me the part and a trumpet and it went together. Bach is making them that I know of. Keep in mind that these are for old Bachs - other brands may require different modifications.
