I'm still loving this mute! I usually DO give a little 'hot breath' into the bell routine and haven't had a problems with the foam. I bought another to keep in my travel bag and also just bought 2 more for gifts to a few of my trumpet playing friends. Did I say I LOVE this thing??!!! |
Thanks, glad that it is quite durable for the price. Definitely the best practice mute I have tried so far.
I want to get my hand on EZ Silencer eventually, but hesitating the 20$ shipment cost to France. Maybe after Pampet honeymoon... _________________ Oink, oink.

I use the same system for years but then self-made. I use a cork of a wine bottle, cut to fit the Jo Ral Bubble stem entrance and I drilled a nine mm hole in it. Very cheap and works perfect with a diffuse soft tone and thanks to the big hole no real added resistance. |
I just saw this....thank you for the tip! _________________ My go-to Trumpet and Flugel: Thane.

Horns and musicians response differently to practice mutes. You need to determine what works best for you.
I'm restricted to playing muted, due to hearing damage, and have spent a lot of time with:
Pampet
Sshhmute
Dillon
Wallace Studio (about a week on this one)
For my situation:
All provide 20-25 dB noise reduction near my ear. That's at least 4x more quiet. I find all to be acceptable in this respect. My spouse can't hear me play anywhere in the house if my practice room door is closed.
For my trumpet, cornet and natural trumpet, the Wallace is the best solution in terms intonation and sound quality (i.e., most pleasing to my brain).
For bugle, the sshhmute is the best solution. Intonation is all over the place with the Wallace.
Intonation is poor on any horn with the Dillon. Sound is o.k. I gave it away.
Best mute for me: Wallace Studio
The Pampet is acceptable, intonation-wise, but I'm not crazy about the sound. If I was a student on a limited budget, I could certainly make do with this one.
Resistance is not an issue for me, but they all feel about the same. I don't detect any effect of the 'variable' resistance with the Wallace, although there is clearly a difference when the 'resistor' is removed. It sounds like a very quiet Harmon mute. I leave it in to maximize sound reduction.
Your mileage will vary. |

I highly recommend a sshhmute. It is by far the best mute that I have ever used. It's free-blowing and has perfect intonation right throughout the range. It's also made with lightweight ABS plastic, so it doesn't weigh down your instrument and it won't break if you drop it! I highly recommend it! |

Based on TH thread, I recently got a Pampet mute and it is fantastic. I previously used Yamaha and have tried Sshhh mute and many others. For me this mute is amazing. As light as the Yamaha but has a clearer sound. Intonation is very good. This is definitely a keeper. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Yeah, I LOVE mine... It has a pleasing tone, intonation is great, the resistance feels pretty natural and for the price it's no brainer! _________________ MH |
