It has a KING case but the instrument itself has no real brand identification on it.

Any insights?

Your photos show only part of the bell stamp. What does the whole bell stamp say?

It says Recording King. I'll post some better pics shortly.

Not sure whether this is relevant or not, but Recording King was a stencil brand name Montgomery-Ward used for musical instruments, including high end Gibson banjos and guitars made for them.

Would like to revive this thread. Recording King trumpet, obviously vintage. Hardly anything on the net about it. Montgomery Wards Recording King Instruments does not sell trumpets either, so thats out. Unless they did back in the day, which i guess everyone did back then.

I believe there is one listed on the Dillon's Music online website, but besides that, I've never heard of one or seen another one.

This trumpet model was probably in very limited production, maybe only a few years.
Interesting horn.

There is one on GW site now, and lots of bids on it. I wonder if people are confusing it with an Olds Recording? Possible.

Probably right about very few of them. The one listed above has a 4 digit serial number, and the one on GW is 10 digits different.

It went for 278 donuts. It was straight, finish was bad, really curious as to why they bid, and the amounts. Maybe they will Google it and see this and let me know....

I think that might be a Wm. Frank stencil. The Frank pull knobs look very much like Benge, and Frank was a major manufacturer in Chicago until the late 30's.
Well-made horns for their day.

Yes. My Great Uncle had a Recording King guitar from Wards. But I don't believe that name carried over to any other instruments besides guitars and other string instruments.

Hello all, I just recently came upon one of these myself and was wondering if anyone has since come across any new information. I tried looking on the web and several Facebook instrument repair forums but to no luck. The one i have is quite curious as it appears to also have a main tuning slide extender of sorts.

If you think this may be a king and the King on the bell looks like their engraving, send a pic and a note to Chris at HN White. Do a google on HN white and you will find the current page, he is a grandson of the family and king historian. It could be quite rare and they may want it for the museum.

The OP horn is definitely not an HN White instrument. I do not see any HN White elements among the recognizable component styles.

There are components copied from the designs of several manufacturers such as Holton, Conn, Bohland, Boston/Vega, and Elkhart - the dominant one being Holton. The engraver either worked at Holton, or copied the Holton art elements precisely (made some stencil rubbings from a Holton maybe?).

I would not rule out a Wm. Frank built stencil - though one detailed in a way to make it appear unique (would have been at the top end of the stencil price scale).

If this trumpet were truly a King, it would surely have H. N. White Co. Cleveland, Ohio engraved on it. This horn may have no relationship to the H. N. White Co.

I have examples of every base model of standard Bb trumpet and cornet sold by HN White, both built and stenciled, except for 1 Bohland model I am still seeking out. This is not an HN White product.

Do you have one of the flugel s that looks like a trumpet. Great instrument, I played one owned by my hi school in the 60’svbut no sign of it now. I mean it was the best flugel I’ve ever played price no object. Anyone knowing of a serviceable one please let me know! The is one in the hn white collection on the website. Your impressions of the horn?

I limited my research to Bb cornets and trumpets - no Ebs, piccs, flugels, etc.
