Anyone know where to get lead trumpet aheet music for big band charts such ad Woody Herman, Stan Kenton? I am not wanting the entire scores, just the lead part.

Thanks!

Can you play well enough to join a local band in the 3rd or 4th seat?

That could be a good place to start.

Check Amazon. They have a lot of big band sheet music books - might have some with just the lead parts.

I think the chances of finding a local jazz band that plays Kenton, Herman, etc. are probably not great, plus they would have to have an opening.

So, how to get the lead charts? It could be difficult, there MIGHT be someone here who has a lead book who would be willing to email you some, maybe someone will comment. I played the lead book in college, we did lots of Kenton, but that was a million years ago and it never occurred to me to keep copies.

So, I guess I’m not much help here. 😕

I believe I can play well enough, but I live in rural Kansas. There are no big bands anywhere near me unfortunately.

I played some in college as well, but never thought to keep copies.

Sent you an email with a suggestion about obtaining lead parts. Incidentally, the last forum message directs you to transcriptions of improvised trumpet solos, not lead trumpet parts from arrangements.

Not what you wanted at all (I'd try a local college) but man is that a great link. I've been skimming all the Carl Saunders solos. That guy is ridiculous. That DHC out of nowhere on Love Dance makes me cry.

That site linked above lifted all of my transcriptions without permission...and many of the big band arrangements up there are copyrighted.

Tom Kubis has sample lead charts of his arrangements:

https://www.tomkubis.com/big-band-all

Aldo, look for Basie-Nestico lead trumpet book

Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Lead trumpet book.

Gordon Goodwin has a lead trumpet play along.

Tony Scodwell also has a play along, although I don’t remember it’s name.

Years ago, you could purchase lead parts only from Kendor music, unfortunately I don’t think they do that anymore.
