I am of a certain age and still playing lead trpt in community bands. But recently I lost virtually all hearing in one ear. Now when I play the sound I hear is not pleasant; I cannot hear overtones, just the fuzzy core of the note.
Kind of like playing in a badly made straight mute.. When I record what I am playing, it sounds like the old 'me'. I am sure lots of trumpeters have run up against this game-changer. Is there a solution other than just hanging up the horn?

I'm guessing that you've already explored medical / audiologist help, and haven't found a solution.

Since the hearing loss is 'recent', I suggest that you 'hang in there' and continue playing. You might get used to the new hearing situation, and have it cease to be a distraction.

KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'.

Don't give up

I lost my hearing courtesy of the USAF back in 1980.

Your other ear will compensate some what, only thing is you as well as I are in MONO not Stereo so you cant really tell where sound are coming from, however it did not stop me from recording and releasing my 1st solo album in Aug. 2017. { Man Without and Audience }

If you would like to hear it, its on itunes, spotify and most major downloading sites, also on Youtube.

Keep at it and you will progress into a new evolution.........

Working on my second album now........

Best Wishes

"Man Without an Audience" Album

One option for hearing loss that medicare will pay for is a cochlear implant. My mother had one put in when she was around 90 years of age. It has helped her life immensely, but it doesn't help with music as much.

She has a special setting for music that was added after the initial installation when she found that she had difficulties singing in the choir at her village.

I realize that you might not be a candidate, but I thought I would throw this out for the community.

Thank you so much for your replies. Surgery is something I’ll stay away from. But it was encouraging to hear from a trumpeter who has gone on to record despite the set back. I’m headed off to a big band rehearsal tonite. I’ll focus on getting used to the new sound I’m hearing knowing that other band members hear the notes as though my ears are just fine.

One other thought. Protect your remaining ear. Get musicians earplugs from your audiologist and use them.

I can still hear (over 1000 Hz sheer down) - but I hear so much better with hearing aids; partly inherited, partly ´due to heavy exposure to music (bands since 1958). That said I was told to use earplugs 25 years ago. Specialist in essence forbidding me to play in groups bigger than 4 - unless using these (today Etymotic, earlier molded plugs up to 25 dB damping). This resulted in hearing my own playing inside my head. Without earplugs, sitting in the section I almost hurt, hearing a cacophony of sounds; constant tinnitus. So follow the advice - protect. Question: any clues as to why your hearing disappeared???
But: I found that there are many ways to "catch" the music -using different senses; hearing through the scull bones..observing the body language of others -louder-more efforts etc etc.
Also you write that if recording yourself you recognize the old you - so your brain is pulling games - new soundscape out there which you will have to explore. You will have to give it some time! And fight that "o my - life is over feeling". So don´t hang up - stay tuned!
