Tuning bit indicates late 1800's or early 1900's. It's a short cornet for sure. The proximity of the end of the third tuning slide to the bell is another characteristic to note.
I've ruled out Boston, Conn and King cornets.
Oh, and I believe it is a Bb. _________________ Richard

Take a look at all of these cornets and tell me what you think. Look at the angle of the third valve slide in Sudhalter's photo. Match that up with one of the photos and see.

His bio says that he was born in Boston. Don’t know if that would have any influence; for example, availability of an instrument.
If he was born in 1938, that cornet looks like it would have been an antique even when that photo was taken - 1950’s?
The combination of the tuning bit, odd angle of the third valve slide and the wishbone water key all says it was made in the late 1800's to early 1900's. I wish there was more information about him dealing with his music.
The series of photos I posted is for a Conn Wonder from that time period.
The other thing of note in the photo of him playing is how far the tuning bit extends back beyond the body of the horn.
Still a mystery. I keep looking. _________________ Richard

I noticed that as well; could be playing an "A" bit. _________________ Kevin Mc

I asked Robb Stewart what he thought it was. His first idea was an early Conn Wonder. I just bought one from 1887. Should be delivered in a few days. I'll report back when I have it in my hand. _________________ Richard
