Hi all,

I’m looking for an A Trumpet solo I could learn relatively quickly. An orchestral excerpt would be preferred, but a short solo (less than 30 seconds) would also be great. Thanks in advance!

A couple suggestions from recently played music:

Overture to Sicilian Vespers by Verdi - cornet parts are in A
Various parts of the Nutcracker are in A.
Various parts of Carmen are in A, including most of the well-known segments.

All of these are available on https://imslp.org/

Berlioz's Harold in Italy, and The Damnation of Faust both have sections in A that might work for you.

If you can find the orchestral suite (not the overture) to Smetana's The Bartered Bride there is a nice section in Act III, The Sextet, that is in A.

Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony has some trumpet sections in the fourth movement that might work, and the cornet part to Capriccio Italien has a couple of sections that might work as well.

As for cornet solos, you could go with a passage from Arban's Fantaisie and Variations on Acteon, Clodomir also had several cornet solos in A.

Good luck!

Back in 2011 I created a primer for learning to transpose in the key of A on a C trumpet:

http://bit.ly/2Ma86rl

It includes 21 vocalizes in soprano clef followed by many standard excerpts from the literature that are in A trumpet. I am sure you will find an A trumpet excerpt to play in the collection.

There's always Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake - No. 22 Neapolitan Dance. Of course, it requires a decent double tongue, so keep that in mind. The first cornet part is a classic solo in A.

That was my first thought as well. Might be a bit longer than 30 seconds... just play it faster!
