Hi,

In this new video I introduce, discuss and perform the Solo Cornet Obbligato from the 2nd Movement of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique.

Its a wonderful solo, and hopefully the video provides some context and background as well.

I've been very lucky to have had the opportunity to play this solo with a full Symphony Orchestra and so hope some of my performance tips are informative and thought-provoking.

Sounds cool, I'll check it out. Thanks for the recommendation.

I'm assuming you are British? Do you have much, if any, experience with C trumpets? I do admit I have a slight bias against orchestras in the UK because they tend to only use Bb trumpets. (I do like them for British composers like Vaughan-Williams and Elgar though.) I have a pet peeve about Bb trumpets in orchestra (except when required a la Carmen), even rotary Bbs. Although, I doubt I'd be able to tell the difference between good sections with Bb vs. C trumpets in a comparison! The whole thing is most likely because I personally prefer playing on a C rather than a Bb in nearly all circumstances, even commercial gigs!

Since I first got one, I've always felt more comfortable with a C, to me they are more nimble, accurate, precise, controllable, and have a "better" sound. I think it might have a do with the Bb trumpets I've had (Conn Director, late 90's Bach Stradivarius 37/25, early 80's Bach Stradivarius 37/25, Yamaha Xeno 8335IIG, J. Monke rotary) as I have briefly tested out some Bbs that for me played like a dream and just as well as a C. Those were a Shires CMW, a French Besson (don't know which model), and a B&S (don't know which model). I wonder if the bore size has something to do with it but I've never tried a large bore Bb or medium-large bore C as far as I know.

Dear lord...give me a break. Listen to the video below and tell me if you still have a bias. What an idiotic comment. I prefer C trumpet as well (I play in a full time American orchestra), but to say you have a bias against them because they play Bb trumpet is extraordinarily naive.

Hey Joe, I’m a reasonably busy working player in Houston, may I ask to share your digits? You can PM me, I’ll share as well. A local, truly amazing ‘legit’ player showed up at a big band with a C one time years ago. I don’t think he enjoyed the experience at all...

Agree 100%. I could come up with another word than naive, but I'll leave it at that.
