Bix got a lot of press at the time because he was a great player, with a great sound.
Louis Armstrong said this about Bix: "All of a sudden Bix stood up and took a solo and those pretty notes went right through me. "Bix Beiderbecke, he was the poet. He instead of having that really dramatic way of phrasing (Louis Armstrong) he had a really soft, sweet way of phrasing things. Instead of that sharp eighth/quarter note attack, he had sort of a rolling eighth note. And he had a lovely sort of sweet approach to the harmony like he was telling you a story. A big fat sound."
