Last night I was at a school band zone concert, where elementary and highschool bands from the district performed. It opened with a jazz group doing A Night in Tunisia. The kid on trumpet was playing four eighth notes with the last one tied to a longer note, instead of the triplet followed by half note. Has anyone seen an arrangement like that? Would it be written that way to make it "easier" for young folks? Or was it more likely he was just getting it wrong?

The first result when I searched JW Pepper had it with 8ths as you describe

So I would guess it's just a simpler/easier arrangement.

Thanks but that's the piano and bass part you're looking at there. The intro. I'm referring to the trumpet melody.

The recording has the whole chart and the trumpet plays four eighths, last one tied.

lots of peopel have played it that way, fits some grooves better than the triplet.
You can play however you want of course, and a writer could write any way they wanted too

I am playing the Miles Davis version on miles of miles over and over and over. I have listened to a few versions with Dizzy, but do not care for his version where the Trombone plays the lead. I like Dizzy’s version where he plays the lead on trumpet though and find it nearly as appealing as Miles version of it playing with Coltrane, Adderly, Evans etc.

Just starting back after laying off for many many years, I am somewhat challenged to play along with these tracks. I really like the Afro-Cuban beat and the saxophones at the intro. The bass part along with the saxophones creates many layers to this song with Miles sailing over the top. I just love this so much.

I know this is a stretch to start out playing this tune after laying off for so many years, but it reminds me of where I want to go.

I can imagine it now. Sounds hip.
