Hi all. (Apologies if this topic has already been discussed.)
Anyone play the musical "Jekyll & Hyde"? I am slated to play it in the fall. Does it double flugel? What mutes are used? Range?
Any and all info would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance! |

update: Just finished the run of shows. Fun show with some power ballads.
Here’s my take on it 😊 – hope this helps!
JEKYLL & HYDE
Bb trumpet
straight mute, cup mute (only used in 8 measures)
Range: up to high C sharp. Very manageable score for trumpet. Though most of this show in one big segue, there is plenty of downtime. Orchestral/classical style. Trumpet is there for color and climatic moments.
Errata:
#5 Facade- use straight mute measures 51 & 52 to match f. horn tone.
#8 Engagement Party- previous song ends w/str mute, but fast open for this song.
#13 Bring On The Men- m 3 & 4 should be identical to m 1 & 2.
#23 Someone Like You- the horn cue at m 20 should be a concert A.
#24 Alive Reprise- nix the “2 Times” marking at beginning: this marking is not in anyone else’s score, including conductor’s. Open for m 4 and beyond.
#38 The Confrontation- open for m 55 and beyond.

In the orchestration that I played, it had some very interesting voicings. The french horn actually had most of the brass lead lines and the trumpet was supporting the french horn. It was a regional amateur theater group but we did use a full orchestra. To find the right sound to blend with the french horn, I ended up playing the whole show in a rotary C trumpet. _________________ Pat Shaner
