Just saw Snarky Puppy at the Cleveland Masonic Auditorium Thursday May 16, 2019.
Justin Stanton (trumpet and keyboards) and Mike “Maz” Maher on trumpet and flugelhorn.
Snarky Puppy plays an amalgamation of jazz, rock and world music with a heavy emphasis on groove, the music is (IMHO) very sophisticated. At any one time there were 9 people on stage last night and the performance was augmented (at times) by two additional percussionists. Snarky Puppy is led by Michael League (Michael plays bass) and writes most of the music.
The instrumentation is one drummer, a percussionist, three or four guys on keys, bass, guitar and a sax player who also plays flute, in addition to the trumpets previously mentioned. Most of these guys met at the University of North Texas.
The reason I wanted to talk about them is the trumpets are not high note specialists but the sound of high brass figures prominently in the music. The trumpet is a soprano instrument and to the average listener anything above a double g sounds screechy (my opinion). The trumpets are both mic’d properly and run through either the loudspeakers with or without effects mostly just a subtle amplification and sometimes additional reverb, Maz played a really cool solo that had an electronic trumpet effect, nothing exceptionally high but a really crisp clear electronically modulated trumpet sound from middle c to the d above the staff range.
The music of Snarky Puppy is highly percussive and electric guitars and keyboards figure prominently in the sound, the trumpets play both the melody and some accents or percussive elements. Played by the right person the trumpet can excel in any aspect of contemporary music. Kudos to Justin and Maz for some awesome trumpet playing and a very fun evening!

I caught them in St Paul a week ago. A great show, with elements of hip hop and funk as well. The trumpets were integral to the ensemble sound, and each musician had an opportunity to step out and show their chops. As I looked around the room, it was mostly 20 - 30 somethings, so they are connecting with a younger crowd. Also, the show was mostly instrumental; very little voice.

They also have another trumpet that plays with them, Jay Jennings, who is based out of LA now. They're all phenomenal players.

Check the recently released "Scott Ave" release from Jay's YaYennings Quartet. So good.
