I currently listen to bands like Tower of Power, Blood, Sweat, and Tears, Earth, Wind, and Fire, anything involving The Jerry Hey horns, Denver and the Mile High orchestra and a few others. What are good CURRENT combo bands that feature horn sections that still play today? I want to find new groups to listen to, but I would like them to be current so that hopefully I could travel to see them live. Thanks!

Vinyl Hampdin

Tim Akers and the Smoking Section. Steve Patrick is the lead trumpet. They do covers of classic funk and current tunes as well. Akers is a fantastic arranger.

Both have great videos on YouTube. Vinyl Hampdin is the brainchild of former Maynard trombonist Steve Wiest, and the horn section includes Frank Greene on trumpet, as well as Ray Hermann (of Chicago--he replaced the ailing Walt Parazaider) on sax. Stockton Helbring, also a Maynard alum, is the drummer. Killer band with awesome charts by Wiest and an amazing female vocalist. Steve is working on getting a tour together in the fall.

Also, Here Come the Mummies - a little creepy for my tastes, but very, very funky stuff.

You might be looking for current material not just bands, but "Leonid and Friends" plays a lot of Chicago covers (as well as E, W & F, etc.) and cooks. Check out youtube.

And you mentioned Jerry Hay, but not what. Don't overlook "Seawind".

Tower of Power played in Sioux Falls, SD where I live for JazzFest on saturday the 20th, I could sit on the step of my apartment and listen to the whole thing. It's right across the hiway and definitely close enough to hear. Very well received and they played until after 11:30 p.m. before turning loose the fireworks. They were well received. It is coming up on the anniversary of Bill Chase's untimely death and I think about it every year during JazzFest where I live. I had tickets to see Bill and loved his sound. That ended up being one of the best concerts I never got to see. Just a thought while people comment on this topic.
