Hi,

This question has been asked before ( many times ) but here I go :

I am asked to play in a Symphony for some concerts for the upcoming year.
I will earn around $700-800 ( estimation ) for that.

I belong a Yamaha C trumpet,CarolBrass 5000 bb, a flugelhorn and a cornet.
So I might fall short of a Bb for the purpose.

As I wont make great $$, I dont want to spend ( yet ) too much ( lots of dental work for my kids ....) . Maybe later I'll have ( want ) to spend some to get one new pro horn.

Question is :

I am ' afraid ' of buying a used instrument. Already have and sometimes, valves dont function as I want them to.
A ' new ' horn might have his valves ' tuned ' to my way of playing ( dont know the english word for that )

Could be practical to play-test a used trumpet before buying it, but unfortunately, closest ones I see on the market places around me are at least 200 km away. Long trip for one test.....

How would you do in my case ?

Thanks a lot

JiCe

From reading your list, you seem to be ready to go. Don't worry.

Play the Bb you have, since you're already used to how it plays. Save your money.

Yeah, I think you're set.. unless, of course, you want to get another Bb and are just looking for an "ok" to go ahead from the hive. In that case yes, go buy another trumpet!
(if buying look for.. ML Bach 19037, Artisan or 18037)

Work on your transposition, and plan on using your C mostly.

You may or may not find that your current instrument(s) are ok for this work, but it's not something that you're doing all of the time. You might consider a more "legit" mouthpiece for your Bb, depending upon what you're currently playing and what selections and parts you're sitting on within the orchestra.

How do you like the Carolbrass 5000? I think you could get a more classically symphonic trumpet, but that's one probably pretty good (I have the 506). I second the suggestion to experiment with mouthpiece if you want a different kind of sound out of it.

My guess is this is a regional orchestra or a "community" one where many players are amateurs and you won't be playing big, demanding works.
Use your C and Bb and save your money.

Hello all,
I assume that 'belong' means you have those already. I know nothing of the Carol brass Bb, but if your Yamaha C is an older 6445, you are in pretty good shape as far as C trumpets go. I agree with Vin. With your opportunities, play what you have. Save your money, and think of a piccolo trumpet purchase at a later date. I have always made more money with my C and pic, than my Bb, cornet and flugel.

Most professional orchestral trumpet players in the US play a C trumpet as their main instrument. Many US orchestral trumpet players play Yamaha C trumpets.

If most orchestral trumpet players in your area use a Bb for orchestra, use the Bb trumpet you already own. Think orchestra sound when you practice with your Bb. Listen to recordings of your favorite orchestral trumpet player to sound like your favorite orchestral trumpet player.

Doesn’t Schagrel have intermediate horns? I’m sure they’d be great horns on for the price
