Callet Soloist .470 Trumpet

Who plays, or has played a .470 Callet Soloist? How would you describe its playing characteristics (understanding it’s going to be different for each person and their individual set-up)? Thanks.

I haven't put any significant playing time into one, so take what I say with a grain of salt. We have one at the music shop I work at, it's been here a number of months, and so I've noodled around on it multiple times, and had a variety of local players give it a shot when they pass through.

There are some general traits most everyone seems to agree on, and then some things that seem very dependent on the individual setup. It has a fairly bright sound, and slots pretty well, especially up high. It definitely feels different from all of your common ML bore trumpets, but not in any objectively negative way.

The last guy I had through here the other day gave it a go and said he found it didn't feel very efficient to him. He felt like he was having to really push to get the horn to light up, but admitted he wasn't used to large bore horns, with his main horn being a first gen 8310z Bobby Shew from Yamaha.

Personally, I think it's a fun horn to noodle on for a few minutes, but I wouldn't want to own one myself. I think they're fine horns, it just isn't for me. Hope this helps you a little, and I hope people with more experience can offer some better information.

The .470 Soloist was Jerome’s 1st original design, a truly great sounding horn and probably the first horn to have an upper register as full and intune as the standard. I know hundreds of pros that continue to swear by them. For all the years Ken Brader played lead in the Phila Pops he played nothing but Callet Soloists. And he recommended them to his many Penn State students. He even bought my Soloist when I moved to the Callet Jazz. As Jerry’s teaching emphasized ever improved efficiency he later designed with smaller bores. But the Soloist remained such a renowned horn he reused the name for his last design, his most favorite, the .460 “New York” Soloist.

Thanks for the replies. Greatly appreciated. I’ve tried the Jazz and now the Soloist. Both are fantastic horns. I haven’t met a Callet I didn’t like.
