I recently purchased a near-mint Schilke P5-4 which I have enjoyed playing thus far. Since it only came with a Bb pipe, I was wondering whether or not I could get a longer pipe for playing in A, either from Schilke or someone else, preferably with a cornet-size receiver.

As far as I know, these horns only come with the one pipe. To lplay in A, just pull the pipe out the necessary amount.

The P5-4 is designed to play in both Bb and A with one pipe. That being said, Schilke (and others) do make an "A" pipe which doesn't require pulling out so far. Ive had several and always preferred the stock pipe but that's me. I'd just say it's not a slam dunk that you'll prefer the extra pipe.

I've been getting by just fine with the original pipe. When you pull out the pipe for A, pull the first and 3rd slides a bit as well and retune the 4th slide. I put a mark on my pipe years ago to put me in the ball park for A, which I use the most.

I bought an A pipe from Schilke last year for mine. It's much better than pulling out the Bb pipe to A. I would recommend it highly.

I used the original pipe for years. I now have a Blackburn A pipe that takes a trumpet mouthpiece. This is helpful for me because I can use the same mouthpiece on my Scherzer.

I like the focus and low register of the Blackburn

I have the Blackburn A pipe as well. It's handy to use a trumpet mouthpiece, and I believe the intonation is a bit better on my P5-4 using the Blackburn pipe.

Bob Reeves makes an 'A adapter' for Schilke piccolos and it accepts cornet shanks. It looks like a cornet mouthpiece to trumpet adaptor but all it does is increase the length of the Bb pipe decreasing the amount you need to pull the pipe out to tune to A. I use one on my P5-4 and I think it improves the blow and intonation a bit.

It can be found here:
https://www.bobreeves.com/products/accessories/adapters.htm

You can get one at mouthpieceexpress.com for $10 less than directly from Reeves himself.

I agree about the Reeves A adaptor, which for me works better than any aftermarket A pipe I have tried for Schilke's, and I have tried quite a few!
