|
|
I have an excerpt for an upcoming audition. It's in cut time and above it reads Half note = ca. 148. What do I put into my met for this tempo? thank you very much! |

ca. is an abbreviation for "Circa". Latin which translates to "approximately".
So, you have some wiggle room "approximately 148".
Another note, quite often the metronome markings are/were added by the publishing company and generally aren't meant to be an exact tempi, but a guide.
Now, if it's penciled in by the auditioner, then I'd interprit that as, "I'd like to hear you play this at the noted tempo"
But in general for an audition, I'd prefer you play the excerpt/etude well a little under tempo (if you have to) vs. stumbling through it at the tempo marked on the page. _________________ Freelance Performer/Educator

Hello all,
I assume you have a windup metronome. If you have an electronic, like a Korg, you can flip the mode to incremental, rather than every 4 beats or so..Or do like loweredsixth said... _________________ Christian K. Peters

Yes, the first concern is to play it well - right notes, right rhythms, etc. Work up the tempo while maintaining quality.
You can't play badly 'fast enough' to make it good!

KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'. |
