Joao Gilberto died today at the age of 88. He was one of the "fathers" of the bossa nova.

Jazz and music in general were changed forever by Joao Glberto, Stan Getz, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Astrud Gilberto, with the March 1964 release of Getz/Gilberto, and the hallmark song, The Girl from Ipanema. Few tunes have ever been covered as many times as it has.

To this day the bossa nova is my preferred genre, if you can call it that. Getz/Gilberto and Brubeck's Take Five influenced me more than any other recordings.

RIP Joao
