When I joined the town band I naturally joined as a 3rd. Several more trumpets joined just afterward. We were overloaded with 3rds and the director emailed us to ask for a couple volunteers to move up to 2nd and 1st.
I volunteered to play 1st. I was the only one who did. That surprised the heck out of me. I thought one of the established players would ask for the part.
I asked the director why no one else volunteered. "Your part is dominant and you will be in an exposed position and not everyone is ready for that." She was SO RIGHT !
During the first season I had some butterflies, but I got over it.

1st part is wonderful and terrible at the same time. Very rewarding when you do the work and everything goes right. Can be truly humbling when it doesn't. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

Reminds me of my first time as Principal of Athens Symphony..
The 1st Half of the Program was Ok, then after Intermission we played:
Billy the Kid Suite: Aaron Copland
Rhapsody in Blue : George Gershwin
Variations on America: Charles Ives
Encore:
Hoe Down from ”Rodeo”: Aaron Copland
I survived my trial by fire and was happy with the performance.. _________________ Kevin M.

Wow. That doesn't resemble the community band I'm in at all.
We had a couple of terrible people on 1st trumpet, which was basically the full section. I couldn't stand it anymore and decided to swap over. So did a tuba player. And several "current" band members who never showed up, showed back up. And 2 new community members. All in the same rehearsal.
I have never seen so much chest thumping as everyone jockeyed for the 1st parts. We ended up with 4 on first, 2 on second (the tuba player and "section leader"), and me on 3rd. LOL. We were playing Fanfare for the Common Man and every last trumpet player dropped out when it hit the a/c/c/b etc phrase except for me. I didn't realize that was an unspoken rule? I felt like an idiot for playing it anyway. Two trumpet solos we never heard except for the conductor singing them.
And yes...it's all very exposed
I wish we could find a lead trumpet for next season... |

I've learned to appreciate the 2nd and 3rd parts. When we blend well, it sounds SO GOOD. |

I had a friend who played lead for Kenton and Herman, among others, and he said he thought the second player was the most important, _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Especially when the 2nd chair is the sound buffer between the lead chair and the rhythm section. _________________ Dave Wisner

It's not an unspoken rule, those players are all hot air.
If you can't play the notes, then I guess you drop out. The fact that everyone did says everything that needs to be said about most of that section. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet
