Hello, my special lady (not daughter) will be getting a trumpet for her birthday.
She will be a beginner.

The choices here in Australia for used trumpets are basically
Yamaha YTR01, YTR-1335, YTR-2330 and occasionally 2335.
Jupiter JTR-410, JTR-408L, JTR-606, 606L and 606M.

Not much else out there at the moment that seems worth considering.

Perhaps you kind folks with more experience can let me know which model might be best if they all have similar prices?

All input is greatly appreciated.

Regards
Bernt

Is that because it so feels nicer or why?

The yammie has a very tight wrap and it feels good only in kids with small hands but after some years the kids are get bigger and the horn is small for the early teens.

For me the best student horns are the Getzen 300/400 line , easy to hold , great feel and sound and the best valves in the market.

Both are excellent horns.

Yamaha is always a safe bet but I liked the Jupiter so much I played it professionally for a time.

A gently used Jupiter is typically easier to find cheaper too.

If a Yamaha trumpet or Jupiter trumpet are your only choices. Go with the Jupiter 1100 intermediate trumpet. Cost may be more than a student trumpet, but worth it,

I have owed several student trumpets, including Bach 300 ,Jupiter 600, Getzen 390, Getzen 490, Getzen 590.

If Getzen trumpet are available, buy either the Getzen 490 or a Getzen 590.

Before you buy, have her play any trumpets you are considering buying. Do you have a trumpet playing friend to bring along to the music store ?

Not sure if you special lady is your daughter or your significant other. That may make a difference in the trumpet you buy.

The 1100 series Jupiter is a great suggestion, as is a Getzen, but for those who don't live in Australia, the OP's list of horns is almost literally what you can buy cheaply/used here. Even some of the basic model Yamaha's are ridiculously overpriced.

Nonono, my special lady is certainly not my daughter!
She is my live partner bestest ever friend and in her 40s.
So I need an adult student horn.

I am not buying this trumpet in any music store (as I simply cannot afford it) but rather just via something like Marketplace.

There are NO Getzen trumpets for sale here on the internet.
Never seen a Jupiter 1100 either.

So far, from al, your great replies it seems like Jupiter JTR-606 may have to be it.

I have 2 weeks to get something sorted...

Best regards
Bernt

I didn't see the JTR-606 on your list of available, but it is quite a good horn for being a relatively inexpensive "student" horn. Intonation is a little challenging relative to a pro horn, but not too bad. The tone quality more than makes up for it. I used a JTR-606MRL for a 10th anniversary of 9/11 performance and the rich core tone was perfect for the occasion. The straight 606 will be slightly brighter than mine with a yellow brass bell, but it also will not have the monel pistons which on a Jupiter can be an issue (if you see dark blotches on the pistons of Jupiters with an "M" for monel valves, there is a porosity problem with that piston and its going to stick all the time).

Ooh, that is very interesting info a out the M for monel.

I see 606, 606L and 606M for sale.
What would the L stand for?
.

I now also saw a JTR700Q but that is more expensive.

The 606L has a 4.8" yellow brass bell and stainless steel pistons. It is the same horn as the JTR-700 now in production.

We have used both brands in our rental pool for quite some time. I can say without question that the Yamaha instruments have held up MUCH better over time. They also need much less attention when they are returned by the renters. The Jupiters have gotten better since since we first used them maybe 15 years ago but there is no question which brand I would recommend.

How much is it to ship a trumpet to Australia using the ebay global shipping program? I have sold cornets and trumpets to Australia. Is the import or VAT tax in Australia extremely expensive?

Hard to go wrong with most any Yamaha horn. Even the student models I've played have been quite good. I'm much less familiar with the Jupiter horns but from the few I'd tried, I seem to recall preferring the Yamahas.

The Jupiter 606 trumpet sounds like an excellent choice. Do you want lacquer or silver? Have you set up any lessons with a trumpet teacher?

The exchange rate has dropped a lot over recent times.
The global shipping programme is really really really expensive for a lot of stuff.
The added GST/VAT should be 10% but with ebay global shipping collecting it, is seems to be really close to 20%.

What have you got? Send me a PM if you like.

Sorry not selling any intermediate trumpets at this time. Has a been a long journey, but I finally found the right trumpet, cornet, mouthpieces, instructor, valve oil and slide grease for me.

The reason I suggested; ebay global shipping program is it would increase the choices of brands and models available to you. The models suggested by other TH members seem to be intermediate models.

Lost count of how many trumpets and cornets I have owed. Are buying the Getzen 700 trumpet, I now like my trumpet better or as well as my Getzen 590 cornet.

Gumtree here is Australia have some good prospects ATM that might be suitable.

Yamaha older basic model $180 https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/maroubra/woodwind-brass/yamaha-student-trumpet/1225672121

Jupiter 408 model (not as good as the 606 but still plays well) $275https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/medowie/woodwind-brass/jupiter-trumpet-and-music-stand/1225625776

Yamaha Q1 trumpet (made in China but I've owned a couple of these and they play well $230 https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/sutherland/woodwind-brass/yamaha-trumpet-fully-serviced/1225614146

Getzen 90 Deluxe Trumpet $300 is worth consideration https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/frankston-south/woodwind-brass/getzen-90-deluxe-trumpet/1225222452

There are a few others too. Even the King student horns can be OK.

Would a Jupiter JTR606MR with monel valves and rose brass be more expensive than a
606L?
