I’d like to know your thought on how to approach learning vibrato. I know how to do it—but applying it seems to be a different game.

What are some ways I can begin controlling it and integrating it into my playing ?

Practice vibrato the same way you practice every other element.

Controlled, rhytmically, varying the pace-slow to fast, and varying the amount-narrow to wide. And make sure you know how to shut it off. Make it a point to practice this as part of your routine.

When to use vibrato? Listen, listen, listen - and apply sparingly. Like salt, a little accentuates the flavor, too much ruins it.

This.

There are people who say it doesn’t need to be practiced, just emulate a great player or a great singer, I think that’s completely incorrect for a majority of players. Sure, emulating a great player is advisable, but I think for the vast majority of people the mechanics of playing with a tasteful vibrato need to be practiced. And knowing how, when and what style to use is REALLY important.

One thing I have found about vibrato, and other players have attested to the same thing, is that you have to overdo it a little bit at the horn in order for the vibrato to come through in actual performance as heard by the audience.

In this I agree with what Miles says about his teachers. Don't use a lot of vibrato. It has its place and use, and so, like any element of playing the instrument it should be practiced. I had a 33 1/3 album by Clyde McCoy back when I was young. More vibrato but it belonged with that music and he was great at it. Now, try to imagine the CSO trumpet section sounding in like the trumpets from Guy Lombardo's orchestra. Different horses for different courses.

Kinda like the other posts, there's definitely a time and a place for vibrato. If you're playing an opera solo or something, they might ask for more vibrato than a piece where you need to blend with your section.

And, of course, the magical, musical question - lip, hand or breath?

Haha. I think I use a combination of them all depending on the length of the note/phrase.

Never tried with hands...I need to fiddle with that. Mahalo.
