I was never one to give inanimate objects names, but I accidentally ended up doing just that after I stumbled on a copper Super Deluxe Tone Balanced horn in a consignment shop last month.

My other horn is a 2013 Eterna 900, so with the new addition I couldn't refer to "the horn" anymore. Nor could I refer to "the Getzen."

So I ended up giving them uniquely identifying monikers. The Super Deluxe is now called Coppernicus. The Eterna is Doc, of course.

Anybody else find themselves with a named horn?

I haven't named my Bach but my Calicchio is named Lucille. Like, The Walking Dead, not B.B. King.

I called my first Wild Thing trumpet The Commander, because, well..., it pretty much was.

If I had ever been able to purchase a Flip Oakes C trumpet, I would have called it "Mauler."

There is one reason that I practice: to be ready at the downbeat when the final trumpet sounds.

This gives me an idea. Maybe we should start naming all instruments as they leave the factory. We could include a "birth certificate" and name change form just like Cabbage Patch Kids dolls back in the day.

Take it one step further and take a page from George Foreman. Every name is just a variation of Brett and Adam.

Somebody has to mention "Gina": Gina was Joey the Lips' trumpet in the movie "The Commitments". Gina was of course named after italian actress Gina Lollobrigida. Remember, Joey's main playing advice was to think of the mouthpiece as a women's nipple. Naturally, the trumpet itself was Gina.

The Getzens could start with these variations: "Pet" and "Madam". Guess it would depend on if you play the horn or the horn plays you.
