I have measured the mouthpiece-to-leadpipe gap for three brands of similarly sized mouthpieces on my two trumpets. One of the trumpets is a "frankenhorn" with a Bach 43 leadpipe. The other is a Holton T-747 (Soloist model, made in 1973). Here are the results:
Holton T-747 gap:
Bach 1.5: 0.210"
Schilke 14: 0.146"
Yamaha 16c4: 0.125"
Bach 43 gap
Bach 1.5: 0.194"
Schilke 14: 0.960"
Yamaha 16c4: 0.107"
The Yamaha and Schilke are new mouthpieces. The Bach is recent (label says "Vincent Bach 1 1/2C")
A couple of things surprise me about these results:
1) Conventional wisdom is that the standard Bach gap is 1/8" (0.125"). But this Bach mouthpiece in this recent Bach 43 leadpipe gives 0.194".
2) Prior posts here have suggested that the Yamaha produces gaps like the Bach. But in my measurements, it's much closer to the Schilke.
Both the Yamaha and Schilke give a gap closer to what most people seem to prefer in the Bach 43 leadpipe. I have to try these out for some time to decide which works better for me.
I thought the data might be interesting to someone. |
