|
|
I'm considering purchasing a nice used Getzen Eterna 896S 4 valve flugelhorn (vintage 1984 - brass)) from a private party. I could not find any professional reviews anywhere on the Internet - so far. Just wondering if anyone on TH has any experience with this horn and has any opinions - one way or the other.
Your input is appreciated! Thanks! _________________ I rode in on a horse and can't seem to get out of L.A.

Don't know if this means anything--the 895s is the three-valve model. The four-valve is the 896s. _________________ Bryan Fields

Thank you for the clarification. I was of the apparently incorrect impression that there were two 4 valve models. My mistake. _________________ I rode in on a horse and can't seem to get out of L.A.

I've owned one for 40+ years. They're nice horns that have a lot of presence, a warm sound, and reasonable intonation. They have a big bore, a big bell, and a lot of mass (with the extra weight from the 4th valve). These attributes are neither good nor bad. It just depends on what you like.
The horn comes with a leadpipe that accepts large (Yamaha) shank mouthpieces. Getzen also offers a replacement leadpipe for about $30 that accepts small (Bach) shank mouthpieces.
The 4th valve can be used to correct intonation on low D's and C#'s. It can also extend the range below F#. But these low notes require some practice and alternate valve combinations to play in tune. I used this a lot in college, to play Eb and F horn parts in various brass ensembles.
As I said in a recent thread, a couple years back, I purchased an Olds L-12 (smaller bore, smaller bell, lighter weight). At this point, this is what I prefer. But I still like my Getzen.

Make sure you try it first. Some people find it very uncomfortable to hold. |

Unfortunately, I won't be able to try it first. It is 3 states away. I'm getting such a good price on it, my risk is minimal. Can always sell it if I don't like it. _________________ I rode in on a horse and can't seem to get out of L.A.

Looks like I'm going to buy the 1984, Getzen Eterna 896 4 valve flugelhorn for $500.00. It's in like new, no dents closet queen condition (been stored in case since 1997), comes with like new original Getzen case and two MP's, one Getzen 3c and one Bach 3c. I think this is a good deal, eh? _________________ I rode in on a horse and can't seem to get out of L.A.

It sounds like a good deal. Congratulations on the new horn.

That's a great price. If you don't like it you can probably sell it for more than you paid.
I have a 40+ year old Eterna 895 flugel and it has served me well. I've only had one chance to try an 896, not really enough time to get used to it. The blow was different than on the 895, a little tighter, but again, I only blew a few notes on it and it was thirty-something years ago.
I own three Getzens. They make quality stuff. _________________ Bryan Fields

Yep! I own a Getzen Eterna 900S, Severinsen Model Bb trumpet. It's an outstanding horn. I only wish the 3rd valve slide moved a little more easily. It moves, but not super smoothly like my other pro horn does. _________________ I rode in on a horse and can't seem to get out of L.A.
