That is one incredible engine! Must be built for more efficiency. |

From what I've read, it's regarded as lackluster, less than efficient....until it got up high, with a unique supercharger setup.
" Under 5000 ft, you're a meat shield.
Under 10,000 ft, you're at the mercy of any German plane.
At 15,000 ft, the turbo-supercharger kicks in.
At 20,000 ft, you are competitive.
At 27,000, the engine performs best. You have offensive power vs. anything German at this height.
At 30,000, where bombers flew, you fly faster and out-turn German planes.
Your ceiling is 43,000 ft!!!! Nothing the Germans had, even the Fw-190D was a match flying this high.
- Climb first. The P-47's most abusive ability was high-alt performance. Etch 15k ft and 20k ft into your mind, because that's when the engine starts showing.
- The plane is heavy and gigantic. Use flaps to help turnfight - but this is a last resort.
- Instead, the -47 is excellent at rolling. Fake your turn direction through roll.
- You can take damage if necessary. The engine is a piston aspirated monster. Losing pistons is survivable.' |

I read long ago that a late-model change in propeller design made it much better closer to the deck... _________________ "After silence, that which best expresses the inexpressible, is music" - Aldous Huxley |

In England, when British pilots saw the bulk of the 47 the first time, they communicated and warned it would end up a 'sitting duck'. Which might have happened, but when pilots learned better how to fly the plane, the Germans suffered heavy casualties, avoiding encounters with it. Johnson went from white knuckle green pilot, to diving onto a group of Fw-190 alone.
