Our 7-piece trad band is wrapping up a pretty good year gig wise with close to 30 performances, mostly at senior residences.
In an effort to book even more jobs in 2020 we are kicking off a Let Your Stars Shine! Campaign. The idea is to invite seniors who
Would like so sing or play with us to join us on stage for a few numbers.
Another brainstorm we’ve had is to invite audiences to all join our rhythm section. We would bing bag of drumsticks and pass them out, maybe suggest the seniors drum along on a shoe.
Our rationale is the fact that activity directors are always looking for ways to get their residents moving and what better way to do it than get people drumming to music that is so fundamentally polyrhythmic.
What do you think of these ideas? _________________ Jim Hatfield

Instead of drum sticks, check out the rhythm sticks that are used in elementary music programs. They are colorful and, I think, less expensive. |

Bless you.
I live in a senior apartment facility, average age probably 85 (not me), that has karaoke and a choir, so I hear this music sung by seniors regularly. Having been a professional all my life, I can't take listening to these wobbly, thin and aged voices.
But I think it's wonderful that those people show a love for music and have a means of self-expression and that your band supports such activities. Involving these seniors would undoubtedly be a thrill and enrichment to these folks. You're a better man than I, Gungs Din. Stay the course. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Here’s another idea that has helped us book seven gigs already for Mardi Gras 2020.
As I mentioned, most of our gigs are at senior residences. And if I’ve learned anything about that market it’s that activity directors are always looking for ways to keep the residents happy and anything you can add to your performance that gets the audience excited is golden.
So I emailed 50 local activity directors telling them how they could select a Mardi Gras King and Queen. I suggested they have their chef bake two batches of cupcakes and use food coloring to bake a batch in purple for the guys and a batch in gold for the gals. Then they mark they mark the bottom of a purple one with a K and a gold one with a Q.
At some point during our performance they pass out the cakes and you get the idea. The royal couple is announced and crowned and they lead a march around the room as we play Saints.
It’s all corny as can be but it got us a bunch of gigs! _________________ Jim Hatfield
