I'm super interested in the Edwards X-13 but no one near me is stocking it.. I'm in California (SF). Does anyone have any experience with this horn? The other threads I can find on it are super positive but most of the reviews are by people who tried it for 30 minutes at ITG or something. Anyone have any extensive experience playing it?

Thanks!

I owned one and played it extensively. Fantastic horn for solo/small combo playing; works fine in a section as well. It plays like a combination of horns -- lively, resonant yet warm sound -- that I've never experienced in another horn.

Also, it is a large bore horn (if I recall correctly), but don't let that be a decision factor as it is so well designed. It is a very nimble horn, and certainly didn't take more effort to play than my ML bore horns.

As an added bonus, you get the phenomenal Getzen valve block.

Good luck!

I've had my X-13 for about 1 1/2 years. It's one of the most responsive instruments I've ever played. There's an extra tuning slide (optional) and it has a threaded ring on the tuning slide ferrule that accepts different posts to alter the sound and feel. Quite wonky, and amazing to this trumpet player.

You can deal with Edwards directly; nice people, as with all the Edwards/Getzen staff.

My 2p.

I've had mine for about a year and it truly is amazing. Very light in the hand and resonant. The valves are crisp and build quality is tops. I think it's more ML bore at .462" but it is very open and free blowing.

Trent has a great video that illustrates it's versatility- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CfrKKewZKw

For me, I do small ensemble work and it's blended very well with a mix of other horns.

Glad to hear it can blend with other horns... Anyone used it for lead/commercial or two play any big musicals? It'll be mostly a solo horn but I would need it to go that direction from time to time. Any comments on mouthpiece sensitivity?

If you don’t mind driving a few hours, I know Tim’s music in Sacramento has an X-13 in stock. I played it earlier this week! Fun horn and it has a unique timbre that I really liked.

Thanks for sharing that, I'm in Sac next week and will have to check it out. I think all X13s are the same, I don't think they are modified- from what I recall.

Anyone know how much these trumpets actually cost (street price) in the US?

New MSRP around $4100, if you find them lightly used a hair over $3000.

Are stores typically charging full MSRP for these?

It’s a light horn, so it is more free blowing and commercial-like. I can get a tone that’s bright and a tone that’s a bit more orchestral. But even with my trumpet flugel mouthpiece I don’t get much of a dark tone.

I think you can get a feel in the Trent Austin clips.

The optional tuning slide has a rounded crook which plays more brightly than the stock multi-angle crook. I used the optional t.s. on the first big band rehearsal I played w/it and it felt like I'd always played this horn - no weird stuff to adjust to, just play! It's really resonant - not dark.

I've been using Pickett mouthpieces on it. The smaller backbores are too much, so bright it's not to my liking. But you can go bigger w/the backbore and mellow the sound.

I just tried an X13 at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. I probably played 30 trumpets while I was there but this one was unlike anything else I've played. It is INCREDIBLY free-blowing. The core can be accessed with minimal effort with a sound so assertive I felt like the bell was facing right up my schnoz.
An all-around fun and versatile horn. I'll definitely be getting one in 2020. Just wish I could find one under $4k....

The only one that came close in my book was the Van Laar B1. It was also my first experience with that horn. I was very impressed by the ease of play though this might have been more my immediate love for its fluid valves rather than just the airflow. Really struck me as a great horn though.

For those interested in the X-13, Tim’s music in Sacramento has a raw brass model and a new brushed satin X-13 in stock. They also had an X-13 flugelhorn, which was BEAUTIFUL!

So - for anyone looking, check out Tim’s, that’s a great store and good, private practice rooms.

I took a couple of pics, which I hope to post shortly.
