I've got colleagues with Yamaha Fluegels and they all came with third valve slide triggers. The ones I've seen on the used market do not have a 3rd trigger. When did Yamaha start putting them on? What other changes has Yamaha made to these model horns that go unadvertised?

TIA

All the Shew models I've seen have had the trigger. I don't recall exactly when they started making the trigger standard on the other models but it was probably the same time they ditched the 731 number and started using 631GS in its place.

As I recall the 731 has the yellow brass bell and the 631 had the gold brass bell. So how does the 731 now translate to 631GS?

OK... Now I'm really confused. They had the 631, the 731... which is now the 631GS... So what designation do they use now for the old 631????

All correct, but note that in earlier times both the 731 and 631 were offered in both silver plate and lacquer. I bought my 631 (actually, my Grandmother bought my 631 for me) at the Schilke factory and showroom on South Wabash Avenue circa 1977 and it came silver plated.

For quite a few years the trigger was an option, so some horns were ordered with it, some without. Yamaha sold a trigger kit to dealers for many years (and may still), so other horns were retrofit with triggers.

For the 631/731 models the trigger was a option with extra charge, the company never had those two models with standard trigger , I have ordered mine directly from Yamaha Europe and a local repair guy installed.

Regards

Thanks. That helps a lot.

You can still get a Yamaha Flugel trigger kit for the 631 and 731 - at least through Allied (if you are a retailer/repair) and probably Yamaha as well.

My 731 does not have a trigger.
