I've been enjoying the recent posts of Al Hirt videos and just stumbled onto an obscure movie that's featured on Amazon Prime: Fanfare for a Death Scene:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058087/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
It's a ridiculous espionage thriller from 1964, but it's fun to see Burgess Meredith, Telly Savalas, Ed Asner and others. Al Hirt plays Reynaldo Mendel, world-famous trumpet virtuoso, but he's only in two scenes. If you want to skip the other parts of the movie you can see him at 00:21:30 for about two minutes, and then at the end 1:05:00, where he is performing third movement of the Haydn with an orchestra (even though when the camera does a closeup of the conductor's stand it shows "Haydn Trumpet Concerto, for Trumpet and Piano.")
The movie is not meant to be taken seriously, but it's shot in gorgeous black & white. Some of the dialog is very schlocky:
Woman: What is it???
Hero Dude: It's either a trumpet mouthpiece or the end of the world.
Definitely worth taking a look, even if just for the Al Hirt parts. |
