Some background: I play for a living - mostly commercial music, but I've played with plenty orchestras. I have functional range to a double C, although none of us are ever totally happy with our playing in some areas.
Like most people, I've never been totally satisfied with my double A, but that's always improving (a lot more recently, too).
The same frequency (but obviously not the same partial) on Eb soprano cornet is the 3rd ledger line E, and it offering issues of splitting. The F is fine, F# is fine, etc.
Is it an issue isolated to me, or is this specific frequency (or partial on Eb soprano cornet) an issue? I have a few of them in some music, and I'd like to not ghost them within the texture of the music - I want to comfortably play them for real, if possible.
For anyone interested, I'm using my piccolo mouthpiece on the horn.

Phew, that's high! I just want to hear what others with similar range as yours have to say about this. I'm just trying make Flowerdale sound good...

I don't have any issues with slotting that E.
Soprano cornets vary alot between different brands/models, so it could just be a duff note on yours?
What instrument & mouthpiece are you playing on? |

It's a Schilke Eb cornet, silver plated. I want to say about 20-25 years old. Surprisingly good condition. I aligned the valves last week, since there were a couple issues there. Schilke tends to be a pain in the ass about this, with their proprietary felts that are unlike standard sizes from parts vendors, so I ended up cutting them myself.
The mouthpiece I've been using is a Warburton BV top on a 10* backbore. This is my piccolo mouthpiece. I have a 6 backbore I've used for some dixieland cornet stuff, but pitch was uncontrollably flat in the upper register on it. The BV top is similar to a Shew design, as are all my mouthpieces.
I have a Wick Heritage S that I tried on it, but outside of chorales, I'm entirely useless on that much cup.

Okay so it shouldn't be the instrument then...
I never liked the star series backbores on sop, but that could just be me?
I know Warburton offers cornet backbores in slightly smaller shank versions to optimise for Schilke piccs - I know a couple of people who used them and swore by them, but I never had more than a brief blow on one to be able to judge.
Something's wrong in the setup somewhere - if it's not you and the instrument is good, then it's probably worth investigating mouthpiece combinations. |
