I have managed a almost 30 year orchestral career avoiding the piccolo as much as possible. I rather play the b-minor mass on natural than piccolo for instance. The mouthpiece I use when having to play piccolo (under gunpoint, more or less) is a modified Yamaha 14A4a.

So, hit me with sugestions! A mouthpiece for orchestral/musical/odd baroque gig!

TIA!

Hello trumpetera,
You play on a 5B, try a 5D, 5E might me a little shallow. When I bought my Schilke P5-4, the standard place to start was an 11AX. Generally, folks go a diameter smaller than Bb/C for piccolo, and whatever shallow they can tolerate and still have good sound and intonation. I also use a Warburton 6S, but it tends to be bright or shrill.

I play what compares to a Yamaha 14C4 on my Bb and 14F4 on my flugel and find I get pretty good results with a Yamaha 11B4 cornet shank on my Kanstul 920 picc. A smaller ID works better for me. The Yamaha and Schilke A cups I have great trouble making work and when I do I really don't like the sound I get with them.

I do have one friend who uses a Bach 3C on the Bb who does just fine on a Bach 3D trumpet shank on my same Kanstul picc. He doesn't feel the need for a smaller ID.

I use a 7E cornet mouthpiece. It is quite a change from my 1C with a 24 throat for C trumpet, but it works well for me. I went on a "mouthpiece safari" and tried a few different ones with my P5-4, and the 7E worked the best for me. I know that one principal trumpet player used to use a Bach 10 1/2 C and did a great job with it.

I use cornet shank pieces on my Kanstul 920. When I need a bigger sound or am playing some specific solo works, it is a Bach 3C with a 117 backbore. When I am in the orchestra and/or am playing something very high, I use a Bach 7E with a 117 backbore. I sometimes use a Monette AP4S, but find the Bachs are working better for my current playing approach!

For my Yamaha 9910, I use the Yamaha 14A4a that came with it, because it is different from any of the current 14A4a's out there are not the same as the one that came with it. I also have been using a Bach 7E/117 a little lately, and I like it a lot.

Hope this helps,

AL

As you can see, you're getting a range of answers. I'd say it's something you will need to search for, as we're all different. And I'll suggest that you start with something that has a rim similar to what you're currently using, get used to it, learn the picc, THEN you may have some point to draw from to tweak your choice if needed. I think we all have started in one place and ended in another.

Then go with a mouthpiece that is designed for a picc. Bach 7E / 117 or a Curry 5P (I prefer Curry's mouthpieces), Picket 5DE, or others. Those would be close the the 5B rim size and built for picc use.

Yamaha's 11A4a's are not.. and really a very, very specific piece that is into the extreme area of design. Not to be used by the general population.
11B4 or 14B4 would be a much better choice for picc. if you go this route.

5MV
Worth a try.
I used one on Piccolo for quite a while.
Its deeper than some C cups but V shaped and I found it articulated really easily - which might be what you are looking for.

But to get this in perspective I switched to it from a Bach 6. So I am playing deeper mouthpieces than most people ever would.

Schilke 11ax is a good starting point.

LOTS of options being mentioned here!

My favorite picc mouthpieces are a Warburton 5MV and a Schilke 11Ax. At the time, when I in orchestras, I was playing on a Monette C12D mouthpiece and I was still able to get a big (for piccolo) sound with either of my picc mouthpieces.

I've since lost the 5MV and am left with the 11Ax.

Someone mentioned the Yamaha 11B4. I didn't see your picc model mentioned so I won't assume shank, but the Yamaha 11A5 is also an excellent mouthpiece for piccolo, or the Stork P cups as well.
