I tell them I will send them/ email my itinerary and then they can hear me play at one of the gigs that I play.

Asking someone to prove they can play is a ridiculous request unless it is an audition.

sometimes even at an audition. I was talking to a friend who was the head music honcho at a local theme park. I had know this guys for years and played with him on several occasions. I had heard that the park was putting together a big band and I called to ask about an audition.
"So Bob I hear you're doing a big band, can I get in on it?"
"Sure Keith, why don't you come over for an audition."
"Ok. How do you do auditions? Will I play with some of the musicians or what?"
"Nah. Just come over and play something."
Play something. Hmmmm....scales? An Arban study? What? I asked if he could at least get me a rhythm section and I'd play some tunes, but he didn't seem to want to go there. I never felt comfortable going and thought it would be a waste of time. I've always found it to be one of the strangest encounters I've had with somebody looking for musicians.
